how do you use the healing brush tool on an empty layer?

There are certain filters like “liquify” ( and plug in filters like NIK effects, etc) that won’t work unless you “stamp the image”.(cont’l alt shift +E). If you do this even after converting it to a smart object you cannot go to lower layers and make adjustments. How do you get around this?

4:42 -- Wait a minute, how are you using the spot healing brush on a new layer, while the changes happen on the background?

I already use layers but I like this colouring technique with the color hue, and mask it's a much quicker a realistic approach

Aaron. using an adjustment layer to color will respect the shadows and highlights of the original image. So you will not be forced to dodge and burn after coloring for realism.
Btw, I learned about the adjustment layers from you Aaron. So thanks.

Great tips! How do you continue to work nondestructively when working with the filters tab and plugins? Don't you need a full (merged) pixel based layer at the top for those to work? And then the previous layers are moot. A bit confused - cheers!

Amazing video thanks for sharing the advantage of non-destructive edit and the most important how we need to save them for future edits thanks again and greetings from the Bay area California

Same applies to using filters, always convert the layer to a smart object. That way you can alter the values of any filter if you change your mind. Not doing so bakes the values of the filter used permanently, into the layer which means you would have to delete the layer and start all over again 😊
