Even in its infancy 200 years ago in Manchester, the Industrial Revolution changed everything for the humans caught up in it. The industrial revolution was – and is – literally in the air we breathe, in the food we eat, and in every other aspect of our lives. The physical changes we have made to our world have changed our social and even spiritual possibilities. Much of this change is experienced not as liberation, but as trauma; not as uplift, but as degradation. What is the proper Christian response to such trauma and degradation? Have Christians too easily given in to the technologizing of life? And is Christ, who “healed all who were sick” (Mt. 8:16), still able to heal in such a world?

Our knowledge of history has led us to realize that ancient Israelite religion was an evolution of Canaanite religion. Yahweh and El were two separate gods in the Canaanite pantheon. A group specifically dedicated to Yahweh formed and then later this group came to believe that El was the same as Yahweh. These deities were not omnibeings or any such thing. They were fictional gods of specific geographical areas. Then it later developed into Israelite religion. Then a guy named Yeshua came along, who was a historical figure. Then some people came to believe he was God. But the original gods they started out with, Yahweh and El, were both just as fictional as Zeus. The entire foundation of Abrahamic religion is shaky.
