One more note - there's a fun author cross ref between John D (Cinnomon Skin) and Steven King (Cujo). It was cool to find.

Read most of the Travis Magee books a bunch of years ago. Mostly in the 80s. But, am in the process of re-reading them now. Part of my way too long TBR list.

Good review. Based on your series, I recommend you try the Stephen Hunter books -- two separate (but connected) series featuring Bob Lee Swagger -- based on which one film and a Netflix series have been made -- and the generation before, his father Earl Swagger. There are some standalone novels as well. Excellent writing.

Having read all of the Magees long ago you're doing yourself a disservice reading them in order, Brian. The next two (Pink & Purple) are the worst books in the series, the fourth one (Red) is better but the series really finds it legs with the fifth: A Deadly Shade of Gold. You'd get a truer picture of the series reading The Long Lavender Look next and making up your mind after that.

Darker than Amber movie is great. Based on the John D. McDonald book.
