Heat-Resistant Herbs to Grow in the Summer — Mother Earth Living

Managing Editor Allison Martin answers the reader-submitted question, "What are some heat-resistant herbs to grow in the summer?"
Hot summer days can take a toll on the garden, so it's best to get an idea of which plants can best withstand the heat. Here are three suggestions for heat-resistant herbs that are easy to keep alive in the sweltering summer heat.
Sage, like most plants, takes a bit more care at first to become established. Once the plant is flourishing, it becomes a good example of a low-maintenance, heat-resistant herb that will be easy to grow and maintain in the summer.
A second option is lavender. It's similar to sage in that it takes a little bit of extra care at first to get it started, but once it's growing it will thrive in the summer heat. Try planting your lavender plant somewhere near a driveway, street or sidewalk so it can pick up some of the radiant heat from the concrete or pavement.
A third, heat-resistant herb that really loves the summer sun is lemon balm. This plant can be found at your local nursery under the name "Melissa," so keep that in mind when you're out shopping for starter plants. Lemon balm is a great plant to grow on your deck in a container because it naturally repels mosquitoes while continuing to smell delightful to you and your guests.
