Carl Sagan. I could listen to this guy read the dictionary. He's not only my favorite scientist, but orator as well. When I have kids, instead of reading them fairy tales at bedtime I'm just going to let Dr. Carl fascinate them with reality.

40 years ago when I saw his show, my brain stopped and saw another reality. This man was and is the seed of thought of the ordinary person. He was a revolutionists and yet a man who looked to the skies.

I attended college and graduate school in the 70s/80s...and I got to see great minds on TV. Before Sagan, there was Jacob Bronowski. There was also David Attenborough, Kenneth Clarke, James Burke, and so many more. There was NOVA, Nature, and a host of other shows on PBS and BBC and NHK.

By the completion of High School, these issues should be exposed and discussed.  Sadly it is not so.  We celebrate mediocrity in the US in an alarming way.  Science is an answer - not the problem.


There will always be religious, ethical, and moral issues involved in the application of what we know, learn, and what we are increasingly capable of doing, as more knowledge is available.  


Stem cell research, space exploration, weapons development, medical care, conservation of the Earth, artificial intelligence, economic disparities, .... we have so much to discuss, debate, and assimilate into our societies.


Carl Sagan addressed so many of these issues in an intelligent and measured way, it is well worth listening carefully to his wisdom today.

His eloquence and passion for the rational long view of our place in the universe have had a profoundly positive influence on my own thinking.

It must have been so infuriating, to be as intelligent as Carl was, and to have such an immersive understanding of the bigger picture as he did, and yet watch as the world's population squandered it's intellectual potential.
