Larry Karaszewski on TIGER BAY

J. Lee Thompson directed this 1959 thriller about the unlikely friendship between a young tomboy played by Hayley Mills and a sailor who's wanted for murder played by Horst Buchholz. This was Hayley's first film and her father John (also her co-star) said "She looked as if she'd been born in front of a camera." Truer words were never spoken, her remarkably unaffected performance caught the eye of Walt Disney and the rest is movie history.

I saw this on BBC television in 2003 one afternoon when I spent a year in the UK, studying in a graduate program in Scotland. Just one of many impressive "old black&white" movies that made me fall in love with British television. I complained everyday to my flatmates how they never played films like these on American network tv anymore or even Turner Classic Movies. I have since been addicted to post-war British films from the late 40s and 50s.

It is a kind of love story - Hayley develops a strong affection for Horst in the movie.
She said as much in a discussion about the movie years later.

I'd add Whistle Down the Wind to the list of Haley Mills films worth checking out.

What an excellent commentary on the movie, I was really impressed the first time I watched it because of Hayley Mills. I already loved her from her Disney movies but I learnt to appreciate her even more after her unplanned debut.

"The Chalk Garden" and "The Family Way" - two other excellent Hayley films to watch.

I remember when I saw Alain Delon speaking english in a Hollywood movie and I marvelled that he sounded exactly like Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Love this movie. It’s very poignant and layered. You can’t help but root for the young man, and you can’t help identifying with the little girl — even though you realize that from one angle, you’re looking at the Stockholm syndrome.

Thompson wanted Mills to play Nancy Bowden in Cape Fear but she was unavailable at the time.

Terrific film but Hayley carried it on her small shoulders.

Hayley is my #1 favorite ! However she and her family joined their father on location during the filming of Swiss Family Robinson, saw the behind the scenes film footage, so it was more likely her interaction with Kevin Corcoran and the others that convinced Disney of her charisma besides the evidence provided by Tiger Bay.

I'll have to track this down. I guess J. Lee Thompson just wanted to keep working toward the end of his career. Those Cannon films are...something.
