Vertical Gardening | Refresh Soil, Flower Pots & More

It's time to plant! My main garden space is resting this year, so we're going to take advantage of the Green Stalk Garden planters and grow some food. We often use them on the back deck of our house, to grow what we like to call our "Kitchen Garden". Things like herbs, that we can run out quickly and grab while cooking dinner. But I'm also going to do some things like lettuce, kale, and some peas. Today, we'll focus on the later, and in a couple weeks we'll work on getting the herbs and other things going.

I have three, yes three, greenstalks....and I LOVE THEM!!!! I'm old, can't get to the ground unless I fall down lolol These have given me back my ability to grow fresh veggies and flowers. First thing, be sure they are level wherever you put them...otherwise they do not allow water to every "cell". Second, if you can, fill right up to the very brim with fluffy potting soil (per makers' suggestion) to allow for compaction. Have a ball you guys! Did I mention I LOVE THESE THINGS??? lolol xo from that granny

Thanks to you Rachel, I have two, 7 tier Greenstalk planters filled to the brim with strawberries!! They look to be ripe on Mother's Day too! Bonus!!

I'm broke, so I used a Harbor Freight mover dolly with olywood for my turner. Very affordable.

Still thinking about getting one of these! Out of all the videos I have watched on how to use these green stalks yours is by far the best! You explain the types of plants which is lacking in everyone else as well as re using the soil. Thank you!

Hi Rachel, may I suggest creating a hoop out of chicken wire to put around the base of the greenstalk to keep the dogs from eating your bounty? Just make a giant circle out of the chicken wire, not touching the greenstalk and secure it with twist ties or clips, something that you can easily remove to get to the veggies. Can't wait to watch the progress!

I don’t have space for a big garden but I am growing in containers. I am having a blast. My lettuce is so nice and full. Tomatoes are flowering. Onions growing nicely. Everything is doing great. I have to get a Greenstalk. Thank you so much Rachel for all you do. I just love hanging out with you and Todd. I have learned so much from y’all and can’t thank you enough. Just got 2 new original Greenstalks on the Mother's day BOGO sale...super excited to start👏

I have 2 green stalks. They didn't work well for me. It's just to hot here in Florida. They dry out way to fast. Plus, I would forget to turn them. BUT, the birds love them. The wrens are drawn to them, so that is what they are for now. It doesn't matter where I put them, they find them. Yep, 2 sets in the garage. 😆I feel honored that they trust us. Even right next to the doors, they never fly away.

Thank you so much Rachel! I will try some snow peas in one of my original GS. Just finished refilling a leaf planter I had strawberries in. They did not survive that minus 25 degrees back in December. Sadly. Bought more strawberries 🍓 and another GreenStalk as well 😂😂. My existing GS I have Jewel strawberries, Lemon Drop Marigold, Kilimanjiaro White Marigold, 2 types Holy Basil, Opal Basil and Fern Leaf Dill.
New planter will have Eversweet strawberries, Perpetual Spinach Chard, Lemon Basil, more of the Marigolds and....

My dogs love kale and steal it from the chickens. 😁 I had a bottle lamb that stayed in the yard grazing during the day and he ate everything that he could reach on either 4 of 2 legs from my Green Stalks. 😩 He’s in the pasture now and I started over. I love my Green Stalks.

Looks great. Maybe put a few separate pots of flowers around the bottom to keep pups at bay. Happy growing!

Don't forget herbs - Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Chives? I found if it's not convenient to harvest the spices, I don't bother. So I plant them close to the kitchen. Deck planters work nicely. Just did mine this week.
Do a couple of elephant ears in pots. Trust me, those are a kick.
I love gardening on my upper deck. I installed a permanent faucet and run water up to it using a garden hose each year. You just have to drain the water out before it freezes. It's so nice having a faucet there.
