Two things great about this. First is how Charles tells the story. Second is how completely in character it is for both men.

Kareem was known to be super introverted. Highly intelligent but very off putting. He also had issues with guys who was very extroverted like wilt, Jordan, and at times Magic. So it’s not shocking that he kinda reacted like that towards Charles who is very extroverted.
