Welcome to the wacky world of stepped hi-hat notes.
Colin muses that the hi-hat is the most underrated element of the drum set, and the art of playing it with the foot is largely ignored by a lot of drummers. But hopefully this lesson will help you get started on working that

hi-hat pedal.

First, a quick word about technique; you can play the hi-hat pedal with your foot flat or with your heel slightly raised.
The first technique is good for raising the hi-hat for specific musical intervals, while you will find the latter technique will give you a sharper, tighter note...
