Good for him! He did what most don't have the courage to do – to stand up against superiors that order immoral and illegal actions. This Russian officer is a very brave man with civil courage. Kudos!

This former Russian officer is a 'professional soldier' with a moral conscience to discern what is right and wrong. He knows when to say no to his leaders' evil ambitions and lies. Hope there will be many more like him who could master the courage to repent and reject Putin's genocidal war.

I'm in my 60s. When I was a Child, in the late 1960s, early '70s, during The Vietnam War, I heard:
"What if there was a War--but no one came???"

This Brave and Principled Man's Honorable Behavior has now reminded me of that old rhetorical question...

If I could say something to this soldier, I would tell him:
"May You and Your Loved Ones Enjoy Peace and Happiness, Now and Forever!"

God damn. If this isn’t a war hero, I don’t know who is. Truly incredible bravery. It’s men like this who make a brighter future possible.

Glad that this guy has a conscience. Yes the first ones sent out were told nothing about why they were there, but later regiments sent out were pumped with propaganda when the commanders realized that many lacked the will to fight.

This is not just a display of courage but a display of intelligence. It is very stupid to blindly follow orders when you know it's wrong and you know it will likely result in your death. There are no winners in this war. Don't throw your life away because of your leaders warped and delusional sense of what he thinks is necessary for regional security.

The first step to any genocide is to dehumanize the victims by labeling them as something highly offensive to the intended aggressors. Hence use of the Nazi term.

Holistic 2 sided information is news. 1 sided information is advertisement.

I think going home took more courage than resigning.

Just glad to be home I understand, but is this the type of home he wants?

He's not the only officer that's ashamed of their actions. Several others have been interviewed by journalists since they were captured and they explained that they were lied to by their own commanders. They were told that they were there to get rid of Nazis - but the only Nazis in Ukraine were the Russians! It's a great shame that the officer did not surrender to the Ukrainians, because he may be executed for resigning. They might regard his actions as cowardice and put him in front of a firing squad. If he had surrendered (as many Russians are doing) then at least he would live through the war and return alive, but as it is now, he might be killed by his own side to stop further defections.
