Candlelight Carol
This piece was written in response to a commission from the Church of the Assumption, Pittsburgh, in 1984. Originally for organ, the accompaniment was later scored by the composer for flute, oboe, harp and strings.

LYRICS:
How do you capture the wind on the water?
How do you count all the stars in the sky?
How can you measure the love of a mother,
Or how can you write down a baby’s first cry?

Candlelight, angel light, firelight and starglow
Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn.
Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo!
Angels are singing; the Christ child is born.

Shepherds and wise men will kneel and adore him,
Seraphim round him their vigil will keep;
Nations proclaim him their Lord and their Saviour,
But Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep.

Find him at Bethlehem laid in a manger:
Christ our Redeemer asleep in the hay.
Godhead incarnate and hope of salvation:
A child with his mother that first Christmas Day.

(Words and music: John Rutter)

The John Rutter Christmas Album
This album gathers together most of the carols composed by John Rutter over the years, plus a sprinkling of Rutter arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a programme which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story.

John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.

I heard this for the first time today. It is stunning.

Our church choir had a tradition of singing this every year for the Christmas program. But not this year, because of Covid. Listening to it is beautiful, but bittersweet. Here's hoping the choirs can sing again next year.

Christmas of 2023 is going to be a little bit bittersweet for me on this point. I lost my brother only a few days ago from the 10th of December. This carol is going to have special significance for me!

I first heard this years ago. I was so dumbstruck I stopped dead in my tracks. Truly one of the most stunning pieces of Christmas choral music ever done.

One of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. We sang this in my high school women's choir and we always struggled to keep it together singing it bc it's so beautiful. Our choir director used to cry on stage conducting us. Miss that man! Good memories. Merry Christmas all. <3

British Choral music is a phenomenon, in itself, in that there is such an ongoing cache of young, strong Youth voices to sing the soprano and alto parts. In this piece by John Rutter, he uses the beauty of treble voices to a high degree. Brings tears to one's eyes ... the pure, perfect pitch, and God-given gift of outstanding tone. Superb.

The Disney choir performs this song during the Candlelight Processional and I had never heard it before I joined the choir. It's now my favourite Christmas carol.

"But Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep" .... Blessed art thou among women indeed. The first human being to touch and kiss the face of God💖

Like all the songs in this collection, this selection evokes all the quiet reverence of that awesome event that happened so long ago: God enfleshes Himself and enters His creation. Glory to God!

I start tearing up just at the mention of this song, before the first notes are played. Not sure how one can write a song like this without being a believer, but Rutter does it every time. What a talent.

This is one of the most beauuutiful Christmas songs I have ever heard!  It moved my heart to tears.  My husband and I just heard it for the first time sung by Neil Diamond on the Christmas channel while we had dinner, and we had to stop and just listen.  This version is even more amazing!  We are cantors for our Church, and can hardly wait to sing it there!  Thank you, John Rutter.

I had the very good fortune to have sung many Rutter choral works over the years! His Christmas carols bring such heartwarming feelings and strike the right chords for welcoming another season of Joy.
