Today we will have a look at Manjaro Deepen. I want to gather more experience outside of the Debian family, so I am looking for a distro to experiment on. This is an intriguing distro, but not right for me.

I used Manjaro KDE now, and it's realy fast and i'm very satisfied with my user experience.
I have try Manjaro KDE, XFCE and Deepin before. But still the KDE version is the best for my preference.
Everything works fine and I think this is the best distro I've ever tried.

I've been running the Deepin desktop for seven months. I also run it on my young daughters Laptop. I love this desktop. Thanks for giving a decent pros and cons review. Love your vids

Also, you misunderstood what Manjaro is. It's not an Arch installer as you said. You can call Antergos like that, but Manjaro is further removed from Arch, although it's still depended and build by Arch packages. Here are some chosen differences of Manjaro:

- has own repos (different then of Arch) with few unique and modified packages
- packages in stable Arch become packages in Manjaro's unstable repo, few of them is tweaked (to make update go smoothly and automatic, without user's actions if possible) and those go to testing repo, in a week or two when everything is all right, packages are moved to stable repo, so Manjaro is still cutting edge but not bleeding edge
- Manjaro's kernel is patched while Arch by default uses vanilla kernel
- since packages are delated for at least 1-2 weeks, some AUR packages may missbehave during install if they need newer libs or packages that are not present yet in Manjaro, so AUR is not guaranteed to work, but in general it's ok, once you know how to resolve some minor issues that can happen
- Manjaro's grub is also patched so with linux multiboots, Manjaro won't start at all (kernel panic), you have to use it's own grub to start all OSes (which works OK, so there is no problem here, but you need to keep that in mind)

Manjaro is not Arch, it's also behind Arch and more for newbies

I'm with you Tom in that I prefer a more traditional Windows feel for a desktop but I downloaded the standard Deepin distro a while back and really liked the aesthetics. There's something about the translucence of the menus that I really enjoyed.

Good review. You did forget a few things, the main thing I saw was, you did not turn on the AUR. But, as a user of Manjaro, the one one thing I did discover is that the community editions are pretty much bare bones. This is done so you can truly make it your own. Keep up the good work!

I was a RH/CentOS user for years, until Gnome3 came out. Then tried Arch, but the X server broke after a month with an update. So Manjaro is a 'tested/stable' version of Arch, and I've had no problem with it for a while now. I use Xfce, but I think you like KDE. I also add Compiz and CairoDock, but configure them to be very simple. So I end up with a recent, tested, rolling release, simple desktop with some eye candy.

Install VLC 3+ and you'll be able to chromecast. Just don't forget to install the micro dns as well

It is not that difficult to use. To avoid getting a broken system it would be wise to be registered on the mailing list of Arch. Then you'll receive notifications when you need to do some action manually. It is also a good idea to watch the forums to see if someone else has experienced issues after an update. Important packages to keep in mind are the kernel, gcc, python, perl when there is a major update and the match between the with the linux-headers if you use Arch in VirtualBox.
Best regards,
Serge

That's the first time I see something installed without dependencies. Installing vlc usually works out of the box. It's possible that someone messed upstream and deleted one dependency condition, hence the issue. All it takes is to delete one word in PKGBUILD file, it can happen during editing. I saw that happening few times. Pacman does install dependencies so it's not so different from apt in that regard.

Apart from figuring out how to get AUR working, which it turns out I didn't even need the terminal for, I've not really used the terminal yet since the AUR eliminates the use for ppa's

I really like Deepin. :) I'd say that I prefer Elementary most because for me, it seems to "just work." It's really stable and has enough features and customization options for my taste and updates don't break core functionality. In my experience, the distros I've tried always give me SOME issue, even if very minor and with Elementary, for me, I can finally say it hasn't given me an issue once.

This might be interesting for people with an older Mac. I was looking for an OS that would blow new life into an older Macbook Pro, as apple doesn't want you to run updated OSX' on older Macs. After trying a few other linux distro's that didn't run very smoothly on the mac (Zorin and Elementary), I installed Deepin 15.5 and it has been a dream. I'm not someone who's looking to do a lot of coding in the terminal (did that in Ubuntu Mate on a G5 Mac) and I don't need to personalise my OS. I just want it to run and be stable. Deepin did just that on this older Macbook (2009/15inch). Wish I could run Adobe or Serif software (tried to install Affinity Photo cia crossover) on Linux because i'm not a Windows fan and I don't like the road Apple has chosen.

One thing is the distro and other thing is the desktop environtment. Your reviews don't make that distinction at the moment of blame for the cause of any awkward behavior.

Although you keep title as quick look you will take 20 or 30 minutes the best part is you explain pros and cons . Thanks..

The best desktop is the one you build for your own :)
