Q & A on fertilizing, tool + updates & pruning of my newly created hydrangea trees - Spring 2021

Hi everyone,
My name is Tracy and I garden in Zone 4/5 (or zone 5/6 judging by our previous winter) in Toronto, Canada.
You are watching a video of my 2nd day working in my garden this spring in 2021. In this video, I hope to answer some questions that were asked by some of you from my previous videos as well as giving you updates on how I normally "prune" or "trim" my newly created hydrangea trees (that were created most recently). The videos to how I started training the standard hydrangea trees are in the links below.
Thank you so kindly for taking some of your precious time to watch my video.
Keep safe, happy (spring) gardening & see you next time! 🪴💚

Ps. Forgot to mention on video how I prepare the used coffee ground -
During the winter, I spread the used coffee ground onto a baking dish & bake it in a pre-heated oven for 15-30 minutes at 250F...stir up the mixture half way through baking. Baking time may depend on how “wet” your coffee ground is. This will help dry the coffee ground and prevent it from getting mouldy.
During the summer, instead of using the oven, I put the tray in a sunny spot for a few hours.

You can skip to the:
The "hand weeder" tool @ 00:52
Fertilizing hydrangeas (+ roses + clematis) @ 02:25
Preparing egg shells (roses + clematis) @ 05:25
Standard Hydrangea Updates (created last fall) @ 06:24
Will they hydrangea tree trunk grow "taller"? @ 06:24
Pruning/trimming my Bobo Standard @18:45

Finally I understand what a standard is! I watch Laura too, but hands down, your way of gardening is more relatable. I love all the eggshells you use in your garden along with coffee grounds. My son eats tons of eggs so I should start collecting the shells. I found this video so useful and I'm sure you're helping a lot of beginners like me out with our garden so keep uploading 👌💋 thanks Tracy for putting this informative video together! Your passion for gardening exudes through the screen 😍🦋🌼⚘🌷🌷🌷🌷

For my Roses I feed them constantly after every flush of blooms. I believe my Knock Out Rose bush had about 11 flushes of blooms last year. They're high performers and need lots of food and energy to cont producing them. I love how all of your hydrangeas stems are all very sturdy. My first panicle was a Little Lime and half of it was without leaves from being crowded together with other potted plants when being sold. I truly knew very little about them so I just planted it not realizing I needed to trim it all. Needless to say the entire plant ended up very crooked or shall I say curved lol I've since learned they must be trimmed to have sturdy stems to hold those huge flowers when it rains! Thanks for all of your great information on hydrangeas... learning a lot

Hi ☺️ thank you for your thorough explanation. I appreciate that you shared what works for you, i follow Laura too, but it's great to know there are many other ways to successfully grow your plants, not just one way. Can't wait for all your blooms to show!

Hi Tracy, how do the nurseries get 3 ft trunk? If they don't grow any taller after you cut it to become a standard, do you think they decide which one will become the trunk and nurture the bush along for a couple more years until they're ready to cut it at the 3'-3.5' height? I haven't done extensive research but just enough to know I need more info before I attempt to create a taller Hydrangea standard than the bushes I have currently (I have two with thick & straight trunks that is perfect to become standards but 1-2 ft too short right now.) Any thoughts? Just looked at them again, don't think I can wait another 2 yrs, gonna go for it. Thanks for mentioning to cut off the blooms directing energy to the roots : D (blooms on old growth only zone 8b)
