WHY SHOULD I GET BAPTIZED?
RIGHT REASONS:
To share your decision with others.
Your decision to follow Christ is the most important decision you will ever make, and it is the greatest gift you will ever receive. Think about the last time you received a special gift. What was the first thing you wanted to do when you opened it? Most of us want to immediately show our friends and family. When you are baptized, you have an opportunity to share this amazing gift with others and tell everyone how Jesus has changed your life.
To obey Jesus’ instructions to us.
When Jesus died on the cross, He took our place. He died the death we deserved. When Jesus was baptized, He showed the world that He was the Messiah, the Son of God, who had come to take the place of sinners by dying on the cross (Matthew 3:13–17 ESV).
When we are baptized today, we are following Jesus’ instructions to us. In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells us, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded of you.” (Matthew 28:17—18 ESV). In this way, by being baptized, we are taking one, important step in living a life for Jesus.
WRONG REASONS:
It looks cool. It looks fun.
When you see a baptism, you might think “It would be so cool to stand near the stage in front of all these people!” or “It looks so fun to be dunked underwater!” Although baptism might look cool and fun, this is not a reason to be baptized. You should only get baptized to show that you have decided to follow Jesus and want to share this good news with others.
My friend is getting baptized.
Every person’s walk with God is different. Some kids may be ready to be baptized earlier, others later. If your friend is being baptized, this is a time to celebrate his or her decision to follow Jesus. It is not a reason for you to be baptized. You should only get baptized to show you have decided to follow Jesus and that you understand what this means. As you get older, we never want you to question if you understood the Gospel when you were baptized.

“’...for you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard. And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name’”
