Animal Crossing New Horizons is finally here, and with it, came tool durability. Love it or hate it, tool durability is an important concept to understand to enjoy this game to the fullest.

FINALIZED UPDATES:
-GOLD SLINGSHOT CONFIRMED OFFICIALLY TO HAVE 60 DURABILITY
(People keep thinking it is 40, but it’s 100% confirmed by the official guidebook and myself to be 60)
-GOLD NET CONFIRMED BY MYSELF TO HAVE 90 DURABILITY
-GOLD ROD CONFIRMED BY MYSELF TO HAVE 90 DURABILITY
-For the Net: Catching Cherry Blossoms DOES hurt durability
-For the Rod: Catching an Egg DOES hurt durability
-The rock timer does NOT pause tool durability. It just won’t bring it to 0.
-Nets/Rods do NOT break during the tournament timers.
-Hitting villagers with the net DOES NOT take durability.
-Digging up STUMPS does NOT hurt the shovel. Strange.
-Mystery islands: I’ve heard many stories in the comments of people having weird experiences with durability on mystery islands. I just tested this on the most recent update. I took a flimsy axe with 1 durability left, one with 20 left, and one unused. All broke on the 40th swing respectively. Maybe the stuff I saw was a bug and is now patched, or it only happens on certain rare islands, or people just can’t count.
-This concludes the updates for Tool Durability. Thank you for the support. :)

NOTE: For those of you who keep calling this "not a full guide" .... It is full. All of the information is here, updated in the pinned comment, description, and the document that I referenced continuously throughout the video. Also, I called it a FULL guide for that fact that this doesn't just go over the numbers, it goes over everything about the subject. Thank you for understanding.

I decided to fully analyze this mechanic, and answer every question I could possibly think of about the topic. I spent over 60 hours creating this video, so your support is greatly appreciated. I would like to note, I put a lot of titles because it makes the video shorter. You can always pause to read some extra notes I put on screen! :) Remember, if you believe I missed something, let me know in the comments and I will leave a reply or test it out. I have seen nothing but misconception in the animal crossing community lately, including on big YouTube videos, Discord servers, and articles. People love to just throw out statistics without types of confirmation. Well, here is your confirmation (on everything that I was 100% on, of course). Lastly, the watermarks are there now only because I had my content stolen recently, and I can't afford to have that happen again. This video involved way too much hard work haha. Thanks for watching everyone, and do keep in mind that the Google Doc is a live page that I will continuously update with new or fixed information!

This is my "big leap" attempt into becoming a part of the Animal Crossing community here on YouTube. With all the information in this video, I'm hoping it does really well so I can feel confident in continuing these sort of videos for the community. <3 If you noticed any time I spun around, it was just me being confident in knowing when the tool would break, hehe! Check the description for more info about the video! Thanks for watching :D

I really wish the gold tools were unbreakable since they're so hard to get

In past games, the golden tools had something special that would make you want them. The golden axe was unbreakable (as in previous games, the axe was the only tool to break). The golden watering can gave you a larger radius, and let you make golden roses. The golden shovel (in new leaf) let you plant money trees. The golden fishing rod and net had wider reach, so it was easier to catch fish and bugs. I feel like this game cheaped out on that feeling of getting a golden tool. They should be unbreakable, and they should have a restriction on mailing them, dropping the items on a friend's island, or picking them up off of a friend's island so that people couldn't just get them from friends. And yes, I think they should be unbreakable, because they're so hard to get, and we should be rewarded for playing the game to that point.

This really takes an admirable amount of research and effort. All the tool durabilities I've seen online have been assumptions or unfinished. Shared to my group--the ACNH community thanks you! 😆

The gold tool thing still p*sses me off a little because of how rare gold nuggets can be sometimes, other then that the video itself was just amazing. This video was so well made it is with the best animal crossing ones I’ve seen, kudos.

In Breath of the Wild weapon breaking is an interesting mechanic which adds to the gameplay experience. In New Horizons after the first couple days it just becomes a major unnecessary annoyance.

I get why iron and flimsy tools break, it gives an initial incentive for collecting materials such as sticks and stone, but gold tools should definitely not break due to the amount of work it takes to receive them. By the point that you’re able to get them, you have enough diy projects and furniture that still require materials to be gathered, so I don’t understand why Nintendo thought the golden tools should have durabilities that are also so low that they’re better off being displayed as trophies instead. This design was never present in any prior entry in the series, it’s addition does not make the game feel rewarding for collecting materials, it makes it a chore.

I love how systematic you are along with explaining your testing results

Why can't we just get infinite durability on gold tools

Honestly surprised at the low views for this video so far, this is the best comprehensive data collection I've seen anywhere for tool durability, or tools in general. Most helpful guide I've seen so far

I was always a bit nervous about that my shovel might break when I try to get all the coins/ore from a rock somewhere inbetween. Neat that they apparently thought of keeping that from happening.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that he broke all his tools for this (especially the gold ones)?

3 words on tool durability…

*I despise it.*

I wish Nintento released an update that lets you know when your tool is about to break! Like if the tool starts to glow in its last few hits. I think it'd relieve a lot of people's stress when farming materials

i like the tool breaking mechanic, but i feel like tools break waaay too easily. when my golden slingshot broke, i was actually pretty angry because golden nuggets sell for a lot and i have to use them quite often to repair my slingshot when they're pretty rare. honestly, i wish tools lasted a lot longer because it's just annoying at this point. it doesn't add anything to the game except "i have to repair my fishing rod *again"*

Fun fact: you can’t break a fishing rod while you are in a fishing tourney or a net during bug off but the thing is the durability probably decreases cause once I caught 1 fish or bug when not in the tourney, the tools break

I wish they would make gold tools non-breakable. To me it's BS to work so hard for the diy just for the crap to break, i keep hoping one day nintendo will make them non breakable.

it annoys me so much how quickly tools break, there’s an option to customise the colour of your tools but what’s the point in wasting a customisation pack on something that’s not going to last long. Gold tools should 100% be unbreakable i’m very confused as to why it isn’t

You know what, I came here by accident, but this was a really good video. You clearly put in a lot of effort, tied all the information up into a nice little package and communicated it in a clear, structured manner. That's a subscription.

Another great thing about the golden watering can is that you can get golden roses with it making it the only golden tool with its own special ability
