As a software engineering manager, I believe that a computer science degree can definitely still be worth it in 2022 and beyond. While it's certainly possible to break into the field without a degree, a CS degree can provide a strong foundation in the principles and theories of computer science and can be beneficial for those who want to pursue more advanced roles or leadership positions. That being said, it's important to carefully consider your own goals and interests when deciding whether or not to pursue a degree, and to be aware that it's not the only path to success in the field. Thank you for presenting a balanced perspective and offering food for thought for those considering a career in software engineering.

Getting a CS degree or any tech Degree gives you more options! Most tech jobs still require a degree. A degree with experience puts you above someone without a degree, but just has experience!

If you’re going to college or in college, then I would highly recommend getting the CS degree. And, I don’t think this get mentioned often but there are still a lot of people in the industry that will look at you differently for having the degree. You will have to prove yourself more if you don’t have one.

I am a bootcamp graduate and the gap between me and a CS graduate is quite big. Basic fundamentals like debugging is something most bootcamp do not focus on and that’s where I struggle the most. That’s literally my job as a engineer lol. I was told today by my peer, who is an CS graduate, that I needed to work on the most basic fundamental of software engineering— debugging.

Yea ok .FANG is mainly asians and Hindu with degree's.Stop the cap.If Degrees didnt matter their families wouldnt push for them to get one and they wouldnt be the majority at the FANG companies.Im so tired of these big head guys coming up here purposely steering people in the wrong direction.

Why did you cut out the part where he says if you do have a scholarship, college would be a good idea to take advantage of that

That other stuff isn’t for helping your career, it’s for helping you in life. You’re not there just to become an accountant or teacher or whatever, you’re there to be educated. Just go to a relatively reasonably priced college. I have no regrets over my degree.

Skills will be obsolete gradually but degree won't. One time investment and life time honor.

You can get a free cs degree from some companies that have the guild program. Me personally I'm getting it from Walmart and even then i appreciate the fundamentals and to my knowledge I've heard it's harder to get a job compared to someone who goes to college for computer science

I learned by myself for almost 2 years, and I didn’t know how to use a debugger, and I used the print statement to debug my programs. However, after enrollment in an online degree program, I learned how to use debugger and my programming now is more efficient. I feel I learned a lot in the program

I would disagree - computer science teaches the concepts behind things and programming as a means to understand/utilise concepts. It's a different way of thinking compared to just software development and bootcamps. As a result computer science majors are usually more versatile.

“As a society we need to figure out how to get [philosophy and humanities] into our brains“

That’s part of the reason college is a filter.

I think everyone should go (the unpopular opinion these days) with the caveat being that everyone should only go if they can do it without getting into debt

bootcamp will not teach you C and operating system.

Problem is employers don’t want boot camps until that changes the roi is bad on boot camps also

Getting a bootcamp certificate doesn’t prove anything other than you are able to do absorb and remember information. A CS degree proves that you are disciplined, determinate and you understand the fundamentals of computing all the way down to the root. Theres so much more information and so many more opportunities that come along with a CS degree.

Yeah lol, I don’t understand why American universities force you to take modules on irrelevant subjects
