In these mini language challenges, we test the mutual intelligibility between Sicilian and other Romance languages! If you're a speaker of French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish or any other Romance Language, let us know if you can understand what word is described in this mini-challenge.

Sicilian is a Romance language that is spoken in the island of Sicily and some parts of Southern Italy. It is a unique dialect of the Italian language, heavily influenced by the Greek, Arabic, and Norman languages due to Sicily's history of foreign domination.

Sicilian has a distinct grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation compared to standard Italian. It has several variations and dialects, which can vary significantly depending on the region.

🤗Big thanks to Gabriele from Sicily!

What's this?
This is a knife held in the hand and used for cutting things like meat, clothing, and rope.
It was created by the Egyptians and has been used for thousands of years.
It can be dangerous if not used properly.
It can have different shapes and sizes depending on what it is used for.
These are scissors.

As an Asturleonese speaker I understood nothing, but the -u endings reminded me of my language and it's nice.

As an Italian, I can say I understood almost everything. I've watched many tv series about mafia set in Sicilia though so that's probably why

I speak portuguese and I got it. But actually I needed to use some minimal knowledge I have about the language patterns, plus italian, otherwise I couldn't.

Only some words, but not the entire text.

It somewhat looks like a combination of italian and corsican. By the way, I don't speak any of them. I just feel it

"Avi ru lami ca si unciunu cu un piennu no mienzu."
I don't think there was an English translation of this part
(maybe ~it has two blades that separate with a fold in the middle? ^^)

It's hard, probably because I'm not used to it. I think I only understood three words. find it easier than Romanian, but harder than Italian.

Native Italian speaker but from the north. I understood it perfectly, mainly because I've heard the language many times (from people and from media) although I wouldn't be able to speak it.
