I'm 10 years into my IT career after changing from building houses and am now looking to move from being a sysadmin to a network engineer. There's so many resources available for people today. I think the key is to not let yourself get overwhelmed. Just stay focused and approach problems with a logical frame of mind and people will be amazed how much they pick up and retain. One massive get is to get hands on, virtualisation and low hardware prices means everyone has a chance to get hands on with different technologies. Good troubleshooting skills are transferable at all levels. Anyone watching this video thinking about making the switch to network engineering or another tech field, GO FOR IT!!!

Very informative!..after 6 years of desktop support I have landed my first Cyber Security Job finally. just like the guy said in the video take your time to learn the material so its retainable which should be your overall goal.please be re-informed that acquiring this knowledge doesn't come over night, it takes consistency and luck to all who are traversing this path and thanks du'an for educating and dispensing real world knowledge to the people..

Very well said, when it came to education. This will be a personal choice. I have always set the goal and planned backwards. Once you get the plan complete, then you will have a starting point.

Education choices should be made based on where you want to be, not what someone tells you to do.

New technology do not change how things are done. It only provides different options. If I decided to deploy XVLAN, this does not mean that you do not have to learn how communication happens between two nodes.

You want to get into the field, educate yourself. Anyone can get into any field. Me personally, I just keep learning, and keep chucking.

If you chase the money, than you are chasing a ghost. Chase the technology and the money will come. However, you must plan your future and alter that plan when needed.

Now in days companies (IT managers) are looking for the "jack of all trades". Companies want techs with networking, server experience, scripting, macosx, windows, and linux etc etc all wrapped up in one, especially if their infrastructure is locally managed.

Great vid mane....just want to say from my experience I've interviewed with companies that want the jack of all Trades they want you to know Data, Voice, Wireless, and Server type of positions I'm very leery of just due to the fact that HR may not know the true value of what they are looking for or don't know much about way you maybe walking into a jacked up network that will come with a lot of stress and it's worth the pay and sometimes it's to each of his and her own, tread lightly when looking for that perfect opportunity to be a Network Engineer.

I hear a lot of the more experienced people talk about reverse engineering your path. Their experience though is creating a significant blind spots for entrants.

In the beginning you just don’t know enough to have that level of clarity to create a path. I’m 18 months in. So I’m an example of a guy who recently did what you’re advising newbies to potentially do. In those 18 months, I went from SysAdmin I, to SysAdmin II, To NetAdmin II, to System Engineer I, to Network Engineer I, and currently Senior Network Engineer.

How? I don’t know what an end looks like, I just focus forward on the primary current step and what’s directly in front of me. Clarity comes with activity, not prior.

Thank you for these videos. I think you covered some concerns I have about where I'm trying to go in IT. Been working desktop support for years and I need to make a change for my family and for myself to provide the life I want for us. Thanks again.

Great video. Randomly came across this vid. I’m a black man and say that it good to hear and see someone like me humbly speak on his experience. I like to gain as much knowledge as possible and know that it pays but chasing the money may not be the best thing.
