Do Fish Get Thirsty?

In the video today, we're looking at whether fish get thirsty or not as well as what that has to do with whether a fish is a salt water fish or fresh water and how some fish are able to be both. In the Bonus Fact, we're also looking at why you are the devil if you put goldfish in a simple little bowl.

Simon has taken over so much of YouTube that he is sponsoring himself! That is a feat to be applauded.

I have 3 goldfish, the oldest of which I've had for 6-7 years. They for sure know who I am and recognize their food canister. If they want snacks, they come over to the part of the tank closest to where I am usually sitting and start getting all wiggly to catch my attention. Whenever someone mentions the whole "goldfish memory" thing I sort of roll my eyes and assume they have no first hand experience.

I have an 11 year old goldfish. It's spent it's entire life in a 10 gallon tank with a filter. It now lives at my mom's house, and it obviously recognizes me when I come back after many months. It doesn't react that way to anybody else.

I swear, I have had this question in my head since 1998 when it popped up in my head in natural science class. Thank you!

I prefer the “they’re magical” explanation

Next up:
- Do rocks have feelings?
Short answer:
- Yes... What?

My parents have an outdoor pond with goldfish. I and my father would feed them but mom didn't. After about a week, they would come to the surface and splash around begging for food from Dad and I but pretty much ignored Mom.

I saw Top Tenz got hacked. So sorry that happened. Guard the rest of the channels like crazy. Stay safe and healthy all of you.

Love the bonus facts about goldfish. Thank you for showing people that fish feel and think just as other animals do. And are sentient (yes sentient, people—you’re probably thinking of sapient). And thank you for sharing the info about the inadequacy of filterless small bowls. We need more people to know these things.

Sounds like a question someone would ask when they were high.

I've always imagined that for a fish, drinking feels like breathing does to us.

I mean, we're surrounded by air and usually breathe without thinking about it. It's the same with fish and water.

Simon, this is hands-down the best video you've done yet, on any channel

I am using these to add something cool to my sons school day. Since we’ve been home for this thing, it’s hard to keep him learning. I just watch, make questions and definitions, then give him the paper and have him watch too. He’s ASD high level 1, so he is in gifted classes but the generic work they have to send home is not cutting it. His teacher lets me give him these instead of his “normal” reading curriculum. Thank you!!

Watching this brought back many happy childhood memories with my dad. He would tap on his goldfish aquarium each morning. And these goldfish would happily swim to the surface for their meal. Between feeding times, if my dad just walked by the aquarium, the fish would sort of follow him until he sat down or was out of their sight. It was magical to watch. Like he had them all trained.

Nearly 10 minutes to answer: No, but the fact it's nearly impossible to tell the difference if a fish is breathing or drinking would've also been an interesting side note to throw in

Brother Simon, only YOU and your channel, can make a subject that I would NEVER consider interesting, in this case, of course, "fish facts", as vibrantly fascinating, informative, and actually entertaining; sincerely! Thank you for the nuggets of knowledge - however useless they may be - you provide in such a stimulating manner. I truly enjoy your channels - of them, as I subscribe to EVERYTHING you produce. Thank you.
