The year was 1997, location, Northern California, on the early morning of April 30th, and on my 28th Birthday. My radio clock had just gone off to wake me up for school, while this heavenly piece of music was playing on the radio. It was a truly beautiful way to wake up to such a self actualizing tune on the morning of my Birthday. A tune I had never heard of before, though was able to immediately recognize the artist, Gato Barbieri. Later from the announcements I learned that the music was a brand new recording from Gato’s latest CD, Que Pasa that had just hit the record stores.

Later in the day I went to the record store and bought myself Gato’s new CD as a Birthday present for myself. And a few months later, Gato Barbieri himself gave a stunning open air performance free for all the radio listeners, at the popular Jack London Square in Oakland, California, right by the San Francisco Bay. It was nothing short of a spiritual experience for me and the rest of the audience, as Gato played "Straight into the Sunrise" that late afternoon, and in that particular atmosphere by the Bay. The audience was in a trance, with their eyes closed, and arms extended to the sides as if they were flying in the air. It was an extraordinary performance by the late Argentinean master of Saxophone, Gato Barbieri, God Bless his soul.

A toast to the memories……
