Hundreds of pro-Israeli and Palestinian demonstrators marched to the International Court of Justice, ICJ, Thursday, where hearings began after South Africa accused the country of genocide in its war against Gaza-based militant group Hamas.

South Africa has accused Israel of breaching the United Nations Genocide Convention, arguing that even the deadly October 7 Hamas attack could not justify its aggressive response, as it launched a landmark case at the UN’s highest legal entity.

Pretoria has lodged an urgent appeal at the International Court of Justice to force Israel to "immediately suspend" its military operations in Gaza.

Israel has dismissed the case as "atrocious" and "preposterous" and vowed to set out a robust defense on Friday. The United States has also slammed Pretoria’s case against Israel saying it was "meritless."

"I think it's a shame that Israel... is now facing a lawsuit," said Ada Deyl, a pro-Israeli protester who joined the march, which local police kept separate from the pro-Palestinian rally also taking place near the UN's top court. "I think this court case is long overdue," said Zohar Janovitch, a pro-Palestinian supporter.
