Astis Outdoor Mittens Gear Review

Displaying a elegant beadwork design on the gauntlet these leather mittens are named for Rear Admiral Robert Edwin Peary Sr. Peary was an American explorer and United States Navy Officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for claiming to have reached the geographic North Pole with his expedition on April 6, 1909.

Astis leather mittens are hand-sewn in the USA from black high-quality suede leather with hand-stitched beadwork on the gauntlet and are lined with Polartec® Thermal Pro® High Loft insulation. Working directly with a tannery in the USA, we developed a suede leather, injected with silicone during the tanning process for further waterproofing, that is extremely durable yet retains great dexterity. The length and cut of their design allows for a jacket to slide fully inside without bunching while providing a close fit that protects the wrists and hands from snow in the heaviest of powder days.

As each leather mitten is hand-sewn and uses natural materials, each leather mitten will possess slight variation in the look of the leather, cowhide pattern, and fur trim. Astis embraces these subtle differences and views them as unique mittens more akin to works of art.

Astis celebrates a time honored approach to leather artistry. Astis handcrafts each individual pair using natural materials; as such, each pair will possess slight variation in the look of the cowhide pattern, beadwork, and fur trim. Astis embraces these subtle differences and views them as unique pieces more akin to works of art.

Brad, one of the founders, came across original Cree mittens (below) as a gift from one of his best friends, Phil. Phil obtained the mittens from a Cree woman by trading a swiss army knife for her to make him the pair. Phil gave Brad the mittens knowing he would appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry. Brad was surprised to discover – not only were these mittens beautifully crafted – but they outlasted all others he had worn in the past.

Through twelve years of intense skiing adventures – many times skiing over 100 days a year and at way below freezing temperatures – Brad found a pair of mittens he treasured for their durability but also for their distinctiveness.

One day, while visiting sister, his sister's dog got into his bag and ate the mittens. Distraught and unable to find a replacement anywhere, Brad set out to produce an improved version over an already proven one. Brad partnered with his good friend, Charlie, to capture the beauty and integrity of the beadwork, leather craftsmanship and functionality of his cherished mittens. Charlie, like Brad, has a passion for adventure. Growing up together, they bonded over years of snow skiing, waterskiing, swimming, climbing, biking, surfing, or just about any outdoor adventure they could imagine.

After rounds of prototyping and perfecting, they came up with a line of long-lasting, uniquely designed mittens for the adventuresome. Astis combines today’s technology with the tradition of handcrafted artistry. Astis mittens and gloves are made from the highest-quality and hardwearing suede leather. They are lined with dry-wicking Polartec® Thermal Pro® High Loft to keep your hands dry and warm in the wettest and coldest of conditions. Hand-stitched in the USA, the forearm pattern offers a choice of uniquely designed beadwork or cowhide pattern.

As beautiful as they look, Astis are built to be worn. Astis was founded on the guiding principle of bringing you the best and most distinctive mitten for your winter adventures.

I really like them, they look wonderful and a great story behind the whole thing. But I'll be honest $200 for a pair of mittens are way out their, no matter how much you like the story or how well they work.

It’s the lack of respect for a sacred culture that’s been ripped off by a white man that thinks he’s entitled to calling it his and keeping the money that doesn’t benefit the tribe that these mittens were originated from for me. And everyone on here that supports this company because of “Ralph Lauren stealing their idea and mittens” and then get mad at the indigenous people who call this company out why? Its very hypocritical since they did the exact same thing to the indigenous tribe that had created the mittens.
