Converting a window AC to Portable. (adjustable at least)

Same DIY Window AC design in the garage.

I attached it to a stand connected to a furniture mover to make it somewhat mobile.

I also completely changed the way that I was emptying the condensation water.

It's much easier now.

Not to mention, the level of humidity this year has been off the charts compared to last year's dry summer.

The original one I made, started off by cramming a window AC into a storage container and venting it with a dryer hose.

The result was a air conditioner that would not stay on because it kept overheating.

I moved the container to the back of the AC and it fixed the overheating issue.

But I ended up screwing it up trying to drill a second drain hole closer to the rear of the AC.

I immediately punctured the compressor and all the freon squirted out. Completely destroyed.

Loser move.

If you are thinking about drilling a hole in the bottom of a window AC for an extra drain hole,

I would suggest taking the whole outside shell off so you can see exactly where you're drilling first.

Thanks for watching.

I'm always impressed when people attempt a project that is obviously well beyond their DIY skills. I mean that, how else will you learn? Did you scrap the one you screwed up, or find someone to recharge it. Did you consider a 2 hose build, because that is sucking cold air from the room to cool the condenser the way you have it. I'm right in the middle of design/build phase myself. I use Tuf-R faced foam inso board and foil tape for the manifolds, but the tote is a cool idea.

How does all that heat actually get out of the clear box???

You basically just made one of those “portable ACs” you can buy commercially. If you just had a window AC lying around, sure, why not. But if you bought the AC specifically for this, it’s not a great idea. The ac is a heat pump and it’s moving the heat of your room to outside. Because you now have a large chunk of heated air in your room, it’s immediately going to conduct to the walls of your ducting system and heat the room back up.
However, I do love the DIY of this. Just wanted to give you a heads up in case you’re wondering why your electric bill goes up, or you’re not getting the same performance you used to

My only question is, do you have an inline fan running in that ducting?
