The Savannah (Savanna) is the vast open country of the tropics composed of a patchwork of trees and shrubs on a bed of grass. It is a result of the tropical wet and dry seasons that cycle through the tropics year after year - the Tropical Savannah Climate.

In this video on biogeography we take a close look at the Savannah Biome. What is the Savannah? What makes it that way? And what countries have the Savannah?

The Savannah Biome dominates the continent of Africa at the centre of our world but is also found in Brazil, Australia, India and the Caribbean. 🌎🌍🌏

Of all the world’s habitats, this one supports the earth’s most famous fauna and wildlife. This is the home of the safari of the Masai Mara of Kenya, the Serengeti of Tanzania and the Kruger National Park of South Africa. 🐗🦘🦒🐘🦛🦏🦓🐆

Productivity in fleshwater and tropicalsavanna woodland ecosystem

The large mammals of other regions (of which there used to be a number of species) are gone now unfortunately, it's basically just the African ones that remain. Mammoths, sabre tooth tigers, giant sloths, among others are all gone. One of my favorite biomes is the mammoth steppe, which is what used to cover much of today's boreal forests of the northern regions during the previous glacial periods. It supported much more life back in the day according to some estimates in comparable amounts to today's tropical savannahs, though that seems strange so far north to me. Interesting to see some projects attempting to restore parts of it with large animals still remaining.
