Too many shows had the same sort of philosophy of trying to "replace" characters as they came and went. It makes sense when it's a workplace drama because staffing, but for school or slice of life stuff like That 70s Show they really should have gone for more stories about feeling that void and trying to work through it.

Honestly comparing replacing a show member with replacing a friend irl is really interesting, I’ve never thought about it but it is weird shows don’t just let the dynamic change a little so that they can still keep the show going, like imagine if they just had Eric leave and had the other members continue on living their lives until they were ready to end the show or have Eric come back for one last episode

You are incorrect about a key fact. The Showrunners did NOT have the intent to hire Josh Meyers to replace anyone. They wanted to hire Eddie Kaye Thomas from American Pie fame. It was FOX that, pretty much forced the idea of Meyers on the showrunners.
