Here's the part that the video fails to mention:

The reason JK Rowling got so rich off of HP is she kept the rights to HP. Often with high profile authors, the publisher owns the rights to anything they make. The author might have a deal to get some percentage of royalties, but it's often very small. JK owns the characters in Harry Potter. JK was able to negotiate her cut on her own terms even when it came to selling the movie rights, licensing the games, licensing the merchandise, so on.

There are plenty of authors who have written wildly successful books or book series, but none of them are billionaires. JK's labor of writing the books may have kicked off the process, but the true key to her wealth is ownership. Billionaires don't get to be billionaires from their labor.

It took her really long to get the first book published though. And don't forget that most authors never get published, or have to carry costs for their first sets of prints themselves. Author is a horribly difficult job, very luck reliant and not to be taken as a example of how to succeed in life. There are success stories everywhere, doesn't mean there is success everywhere for you
