Modern Interpretations of Greek Chorus

Dr Lucy Jackson, Teaching Fellow at King's College London & Knowledge Exchange Fellow at the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) looks back over some of the recent Greek productions at the National Theatre, and their portrayal of the collective voice of the chorus, featuring directors Katie Mitchell, Carrie Cracknell, Polly Findlay and actor Helen McCrory.

In 2024 I think the problem w the chorus, if ever there was a problem, is the interpreter tries to make it modern. For one: w phrases like "honoring" you've distanced yourself from the origin. Sure, it connects w the audience, but what were they going through?! The central point is, in my opinion, the human experience of the people living it, not the audience.
