I never heard John Denver's recording of this Tom Paxton song. This one is exceptionally emotional because you can hear the breaks in his voice at the most emotional words of the song. This was not "phoned in" as they say regarding performances. I love it and am so grateful for whoever posted this. I think relates to both people in a relationship, and is perhaps even more meaningful for the people who've been left because it's the apology and the recognition by the leaver that so many broken hearts never get.

Of all the love songs, this one still touches me because of the beauty of the simple melody, the earnest delivery of Tom Paxton or John Denver, and the lyrics which so perfectly recall the most painful experience of my life when my husband suddenly left me after 23 years together. We tried hard & certainly didn't mean to be unkind, but could have loved each other better. Now I'm a marriage counselor trying to help other couples to prevent this kind of suffering.
