A red card is a form of disciplinary action in association football (soccer), rugby, and some other sports. It is shown by the referee to a player who has committed a serious infraction of the rules of the game. A player who receives a red card must leave the field of play and can be replaced by a substitute, with the exception of when the red card was shown for a goalkeeper. A red card results in the player being suspended for the remainder of the match and, depending on the competition or league, for additional games as well. In football it is called also "sending-off".
