To be fair, Rosie has been a skin and make up junkie for years. She had her own cosmetic, skin care line in England, way before Fenti, Rare Beauty, etc exclusive to M&S years ago. I used to wear a lot of her make up products while a lived there. Her skin care, make up line was never available in the States. M&S still carries her lingerie line; which has been at their stores for nearly 10 years.

I think you make a great point that most of these brands don’t fill a gap in the market. Definitely a cash grab.

I feel like Kim came out with her contour sticks too late actually. She definitely made contouring trendy but by the time she came out with her contour stick, that technique was losing its popularity.
For me, I’ll buy products that are good. I am also not a Selena Gomez fan but because her blushes have gotten such great reviews, I did pick up a set of blushes and like them 🤷🏽‍♀️ it takes me a while for me to buy from celeb brands because I am more critical of them but I won’t not buy products just because it’s a celeb brand either. If I flat out don’t like a celeb though, I won’t purchase from their line no matter what the reviews say lol

I was thinking the same way and still do but rare beauty honestly an exceptional. I tried one product then all of a sudden I found myself owning almost all their products. If the products are good then they are good you really can not overlook it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tbh if you're buying from anyone other than an indie brand, you're probably helping an incredibly rich person get even more incredibly rich, regardless of whether or not that person has name recognition. I don't particularly feel worse about buying from celebrity brands over other brands. For example, the owner of L'Oreal has a net worth of around $80 billion which is significantly more than both Selena and Rihanna. Frankly, I have more issues with brands like Colourpop who, while accessible, have created a culture of overconsumption in cosmetics. I no longer long for accessibility or affordability. I'm looking for what feels ethical to me, despite it being financially inconvenient. I'm privileged enough to make that sacrifice. If you don't want to contribute to wild wealth inequality and are financially able to do so, buy indie, which is what I'm trying to do now.

Rare beauty is different and can't be categorized with those brands, massage alone is everything young people should lookup to, it's all about being yourself and letting make up emphasize that, instead of looking like EVERYONE else on social media.

I have been seeing comments from YOU about how Selena could be using mental health as an marketing tool for Rare Beauty and I don't even have response to that 🙂🙂 before making that kind of remarks I suggest you do some research. That's all ❤️

LMAO “I feel like that money is better spent on small indie brands or food for my belly.” Yes.

With Addison Rae’s makeup brand literally the exact same sentiment. I was scrolling through Sephora and I was like cute! Then saw her name was on it and was like 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 nvm.

I couldn't agree more. Literally I feel the exact same thing about celebrity make up brands and I feel like a lot of people don't see how celebs would make a brand just for money

I think I'm in the small minority of people who don't have a problem with celebrity brands, especially if those celebrities have documented their love of beauty, like Kim, Kylie, and Rosie, or have an iconic relationship to beauty, like Lady Gaga. Aren't all brands a cash grab at the end of the day (with the exception of a few)? Genuine question! Because if we're going to look critically at the intention of celebrity founders then we need to look critically at the intention of all founders.

Initially Kylie brought something to the market that wasn't there (she didn't invent the liquid lip AT ALL but there was a reason why she sold out of her initial releases so quickly) but I think there's definitely also a good question to be raised about whether celebrity and influencer brands can/should have longevity. Rosie had already come out with a makeup collection before (I believe with Marks & Spencer in the UK) and has spent some time blogging about makeup and doing videos with famous makeup artists so I wasn't surprised that she has come out with more makeup. I definitely think Rosie actually had a hand in making her products and chose to make things that she enjoys wearing unlike other celebrities who lend their name to/own brands. In regard to Selena, I really appreciate how openly she has discussed her struggles with her mental and physical health conditions especially in regards to receiving mental health treatment.

Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and would love more videos like this. I think with celebrations, it’s easy to create their own beauty and skincare lines because they can literally afford to fail

Small people like Jess hunt I am happy to support, especially as she has only come out with products she clearly uses and that are inspired by her own makeup style. Other celebs just create everything that is basic just to sell

Rihanna for the black community is our Kim and Kylie. Just wanted to throw that out there. I can see how from your pov she didn't have something to sell but for black women. . . It has been a goal to look like Rihanna. To dress like Rihanna. Her makeup and fashion is iconic. So Rihanna was very much already in fashion as a legit model and clothing maker and skin and makeup was a natural next for her. 💓

The brands that bug me the most (both makeup and skincare) are the brands that, in your words, have something to sell like Kim and Kylie. I think in those situations not only is it a blatant cash grab, but it’s also taking advantage of people’s insecurities and saying ‘you can look like me if you buy these products’. I think it’s so f’ed up, especially in skincare when they advertise products as acne fighting, like Kendall Jenner and proactive (slightly different because it’s not her brand). It’s literally preying on people’s self-esteem and insecurities to make them feel like they need to spend money to look like someone else…

I haven't seen anyone with similar thoughts to mine which actually surprised me. Seeing all the other comments, I wouldn't be surprised if i get down voted to hell for joining in the discussion. Frankly, I really don't understand why people like raising their pitchforks towards "celebrity brands" and damning them for eternities. I always feel this sentiment as a bit of an overreaction and lack of understanding of many nuances when not laid down with some good thoughts prior. Eventually it feels like people just want to spite on a human face rather than just a big corp name they cannot personified.

Big corps do the same thing and I don't see people complaining about "celeb brands" put half as much effort into big corps brands. They're in for the money. That's capitalism. Many of them didn't start out with makeup either. Guerlain is a fragrance house first and foremost. The others are fashion brands. If they can cross over into makeup, why can't celebrities. At the end of the day, they all leverage on their names. It's just with "celeb brands", they became personified. That's the only difference. It's just another form of marketing. Expecting celeb brands to do the right thing and chastising them when they don't is absurd. If you don't want to be invested in the personality from a financial angle, why emotionally too?

Makeup enthusiasts also seem to think that everything has to be unique to them. But you're not the only target audience for makeup brands? There also casual makeup wearers. Or people who vibe with certain influencers style that the makeup line they came up with makes sense? At least the latter is how I feel. I've gone through many concealers. Not hundreds but a lot. Barely any gets me what i want (Kosas is the only other one) until Rose Inc. That fits the vibe I want exactly. And I do like RHW's style a lot. So that fills my gap. Truth be told, I had a real hard time finding makeup that fits my style without having to put down too much work until very recently. I feel that these complains that the market is oversaturated don't understand the full nuances of the market.

Supporting indie brands is all cute and sweet but most of them are US based. Access is a problem. Bigger brands including celeb brands with strong funding backing reach consumers in other markets like EU and AU (I'm aware access in Asia is still very limited) without selling a kidney to pay shipping and taxes/duties. Glorifying support of indie brands may end up alienating people as non-US customers may end up paying much more and may as much as luxury brands that they can access easier.

But also, what is wrong with the existence of luxury brands even if the brand name is personified by a human being, like Victoria Beckham? I love her style (not her WAG days of course) and clothes design but haven't picked up anything from her makeup line just because I haven't seen something that would fit me. But reviews I read seem mostly favourable. It's also not a celeb brand because it's a branch of her fashion/style brand. Not indifferent to Marc Jacobs. People seem to confuse this.

Also, I'm not spending my hard-earned money just to "help" indie brands if i don't like the products. It's commerce. I'm not doing charity. My money goes to products that work the easiest for me. I'm not partial to indie vs big corps/celebs. I'm partial to what works. There are so many things wrong with capitalism/big corps but I also don't have the luxury of time to be nitpicky all the time.
