I just realized how uncommon it is for a first contact situation in fiction to be portrayed as a net positive.

In this story pack you have to send an elite crew back in time to prevent determined assimilators from interfering in your civilisation’s first FTL flight.

This DLC could also be titled "You are being enlightened, please do not resist."

And.. that melody/song theme is known for trailers, but this time the musician deserves an extra upvote! Will you upload the full version of this?
It sounds much heavier/more impactful this time.

"Up until about 100 years ago, there was one question that burned in every human that made us study the stars and dream of traveling to them: “Are we alone?” Our generation is privileged to know the answer to that question.

We are all explorers, driven to know what’s over the horizon, what’s beyond our own shores. And yet, the more I’ve experienced, the more I’ve learned that no matter how far we travel or how fast we get there, the most profound discoveries are not necessarily beyond that next star. They’re within us; woven into the threads that bind us, all of us, to each other.

The Final Frontier begins in this hall. Let’s explore it together."

"Hello, Commander. In light of the recent extraterrestrial incursion, this Council of Nations has convened to approve the activation of the XCOM Project."

"Hooray! Visitors from another world have come to bring us into an equal galactic community!"
"Oh I wouldn't say that...more like you're...under new management." *hits Vassalize*

This trailer made me feel so happy and inspired, I'm sure that empire doesn't have any malicious intent involving nerve staples

I like how the trailer manages to make this moment seem auspicious on the surface, and yet also subtly menacing. "To Serve Man" vibes.

Really nice, now I hope there will be some pre ftl civilisations, that are super advanced but never want to leave their homeworld, or never know how to build an ftl drive
And I hope there will be many new events and more story packs in the future.

Imagine downloading this dlc and the primitive civilizations in your game are like "Oh boy, finally we're receiving a rework, we're finally going to matter more than just for some cheap Society Research!" and then they find out the player is a Necrophage.

Finally, we've been overdue for a story pack for a bit now (as much as I've been enjoying the story related origins that we've been getting in the latest dlcs), and the fact this looks to be part of the overhaul we've been waiting for with primitives is a perfect

“You’ve freed us!”

“Oh, I’d say more like under new management…”

This is an element I was most fascinated by (and most disappointed by) since I started playing the game. Primitives, enlightenment, the very strange dynamics that would result from that situation... and on the other side of that spectrum, fallen empires and their many narrative and thematic possibilities (that are... also not explored by the game). Pretty much any interaction other than "several 'unique' species all discovering hyperplane travel at roughly the same time."

Another reason I appreciate this development is that I feel the game lacks interesting and effective "peaceful" gameplay options (real original opinion there, I know), and this *seems* to be *possibly* going in that direction. But considering the barely hidden sinister tone of the trailer and the Easter eggs in the dev diary, it's more of a hope than a certainty that this will be anything other than one more (narratively fancier) way to overpower and exploit.

Edit: just realized this is the official game channel. Hope my tone didn't come off wrong. I deeply appreciate the team behind this game; I just have a complicated relationship with the product.

“Congratulations your civilization has been selected” and “Enlightenments may not always be free but at MSI it’s always worth the cost” Lol

_Meanwhile, in an underground military base on Earth, the shadowy visage of a man appears on your monitor._

"Hello Commander,
In light of the recent extraterrestrial incursion, this council of nations has convened to approve the activation of the XCOM Project.

You have been chosen to lead this initiative. To oversee our first... and last line of defense.

Your efforts will have considerable influence on this planet's future.
We urge you to keep that in mind as you proceed.

Good luck Commander."

I just realized that the empire doing the enlightenment is a Megacorp, look at the wording of the flyer, "Enlightenment may not be free, but at MSI, it's always worth the cost"
