The stand out film of the 2011 Berlin Film Festival and winner of the Golden Bear, A Separation is a suspenseful and intelligent drama detailing the fractures and tensions at the heart of Iranian society.

Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, the film boasts a range of superb performances from the ensemble cast who collectively received the Silver Bears for both Best Actor and Best Actress at the Berlinale. The compelling narrative is driven by a taut and finely written script rooted in the particular of Iranian society but which transcends its setting to create a stunning morality play with universal resonance.

When his wife (Leila Hatami) leaves him, Nader (Peyman Moadi) hires a young woman (Sareh Bayat) to take care of his suffering father (Ali-Asghar Shahbazi). But he doesn't know his new maid is not only pregnant, but also working without her unstable husband's (Shahab Hosseini) permission. Soon, Nader finds himself entangled in a web of lies manipulation and public confrontations. A Separation is the first ever Iranian film to be awarded the Golden Bear.

A Separation will be released in the UK on 1 July 2011.

The best Iranian film I have ever seen. 3 years later I'm still hooked on it. I could watch it over and over again and I still wouldn't get sick of it! Asghar Farhadi has truly created a masterpiece!! If you haven't watched it, go and watch it now!

This is the best trailer ever. It gives away few scenes from the film without spoiling anything and enough to make you want to see the it immediately to find out what happens. Also the trailer does not convert what the film really is or how it is. Great trailer and powerful film!

Yesterday i watched this movie in Varna, Bulgaria. Most of the young people were sighing during the movie and have no patience for it to end.. i'm not very familiar with islamic culture but i really liked the movie. Congratulations, Iran.

This is the first foreign film I have ever watched and it blew me away. I was a bit nervous that I would be too focused on reading the subtitles but it allowed me to focus on their faces and I think because I didn't understand the language it made their performances even more human and real to me. I felt their emotions and love throughout the whole film. It was a wonderful movie and definitely opened my eyes and my heart to the beautiful people of Iran.

An amazing movie! One of my favorite of all times! I've always had an idea of how Iran is, kind of close and not really "shown" in the world - I finally feel like I've been introduced to this wonderful country by watching the film, because it gives such a good insight in Iran :) I wanna go there someday...

I like how it started as being a sort of family drama film but then it kept drawing the viewer in deeper. Definite best film of the year...loved it!

The divorce is only a section of the movie, the main issue revolvesaround the maid and her miscarriage. Really great movie.

This was the best film of the year 2011. Asgar Farahadi should have been nominated for and won the Academy Award for Best Director. I just got out of the theater from seeing this film and must say I could not take my eyes of the screen it was that good. Thank you Mr. Farahadi and co. from a grateful American moviegoer.

Well, Iran is well known for its superb work in cinema. It's no surprise they would do so well. It seems to me their films continue to reflect a great deal of humanity, as great films always do. Certainly worth the awards it has received.
