Just a small correction:
"You said he was late to class, but he told me he was on time." is actually incorrect.
"You said *that* he was late to class, but he told me he was on time." is correct.

You use the word "that" after "said" when you're using reported speech.

From a fellow eng teacher's perspective, how does this apply to "telling a story"? You can't say "say a story" but in my first sentence it isn't specified who the person is telling it to.
