Have you ever wondered how Peter McKinnon makes their products look so good in photos? While there’s no shortcut to this, following some of his product photography tips will help us get started with improving our product photography. According to Peter McKinnon, product photography doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, and once you see your photos looking better, I failed my first attempt, but now I wonder why you didn’t start taking trying to copy Peter McKinnon pictures for practice sooner!

Don't Underestimate Lighting
One of the biggest mistakes I made is overlooking lighting. We all know that poor lighting can cause dull, washed-out photos—but it’s an easy problem to fix. Take advantage of natural light whenever possible, but Peter McKinnon recommends supplementing your shooting time with lamps or flash units, be sure to use an umbrella to bounce light onto your subject instead of pointing a harsh light directly at them. The softened glow will create shadows and depth without washing out your product shots.

Add Texture
A photograph of a product should be more than just a snapshot, and texturing is one way to do that. Peter McKinnon shares tips about how a photo can have depth and character by using techniques like soft focus or intentional shadows. Harsh flash reflections are another way to fake texture, as it allows you to capture shape as well as texture.

Showcase How Products are Used
This step is really important. If my attempt at product photography was WAY too close, it may be difficult to get a good idea of how that product will look in real life. Peter McKinnon starts taking shots from further away. Sometimes you can include small objects like coins or other similar-sized objects to help indicate size better, especially if you’re photographing clothing items or accessories. Most importantly, make sure your product photographs are clear and show off each item well. Don’t forget things like washing instructions either!

Presentation Is Important
Have you ever noticed that Peter McKinnon products always look good? Well, you might not know that he started making real money as a photographer with product photography for businesses.

Pay Attention to Details
In product photography, it’s all about getting a shot that communicates the products’ features clearly and effectively. Peter McKinnon shares that the easy way to do that is to pay attention to details—and by that we mean everything from props and text overlays to lighting and focus.

Use Props for Impact
Props aren’t just a fun way to spice up your picture—they can also help improve it. For example, if you’re photographing a coffee mug, it might make sense to add a coaster in front of it to show scale. In terms of composition, photo experts suggest setting an object or product off-center in your image rather than centering it. If you’re using the Sony A6400, try setting your aperture between f/11 and f/16 and letting your camera decide on shutter speed instead.

Keep Background Simple
Complicated backgrounds can be distracting and detract from a product. To create a clean background, look for a clean room or use a photography studio backdrop to keep your focus on your product. Removing distractions from your background is essential to creating professional-looking product photos.

Consider Focal Length For Different Products
When I tried shooting products on a black background, I didn't think about how the focal length will affect things. It's all about choice and preference—Having a large choice of lenses helps to choose wisely!

Again, this is why I like your vids. I like Peter (fellow Canadian and all 🇨🇦) however pros like him can make it look too easy. Then when guys like us try it and get less than stellar results it can discourage some people.
In the end, valuable lessons learned!
