That's not completely accurate. Yes, dividing the file into multiple parts plays a major role but it's not the reason you mentioned.

Splitting the file into multiple pieces doesn't increase your download speed. The issue with single threading download is that, even though based on your internet speed, you can download a file at 10MBPS, 100% bandwidth cannot be utilised due to loss of packets hence it might download at 5MBPS at 50% bandwidth or even lower.

Splitting the file into multiple pieces (8 in this case) means 8 processes will be connected to the server to download the pieces and even with bandwidth loss, 8 processes combined will still utilise almost 100% of your network bandwidth.
