Happy Petrov day! On September 26th 1983 soviet lieutenant colonel Stanislav Petrov saved the world by not firing nukes in response to a glitch in his system showing the US had fired nukes at russia.

Hey Anton, PhD student in molecular biology, studying algae and roots. I am 100% confident through evolution, extra terrestrial chloroplasts could develop a highly efficient organelle to capture red light. Its an interesting thought because plant cells, and possibly all eukaryotic type cells in general, would be massive.

I don't know why before watching this I didn't even think of the moon as gravitationally stirring our primordial soup. That's shifted my mindset. Thank you for another insightful video Anton!

Thank you, Anton.
We simply do not have enough information about life and its manifestations to make truly informed predictions about how abundant or rare it is in the universe. We have only the tiniest sample of exoplanets to compare. It will be a long while before we can even make educated guesses about this subject!

Anton getting us ready for less than spectacular news on Trappist-1. I'd rather recieve bad news than no news at all, but thanks for showing us the "Goldilocks" formula isn't enough for life. It's something we all should understand.

It's weird, because I'll casually talk to people big in Astronomy pretty much parroting what you're saying, and they think I'm some research & development analysis or something. I even give you credit, which not to imply my part, but congrats on reaching 1 mil subscribers. It's proof you say things that (many) people want to learn about.

There's that mould growing on Chernobyl that uses Gama rays for photosynthesis and we have the conceit to assume that only the very specific spectroscopy of our sun could support photosynthesis?

There could be millions of civilisations around red dwarfs looking at our sun and thinking there's no point in searching there.

Easy. The Earth didn't develop around a red dwarf star.

I love so much that you don't waste time explaining basic stuff..
Like mainstream science channels would spend half the video explainig what a red dwarf is or what photosynthesis is.

I'm getting more and more convinced by the rare earth hypothesis. We don't need a single great filter with all these many small filters all multiplying together. That still makes it complicated to test and prove so there's still a lot more to figure out, but we keep finding these 1:10, even 1:1000 filters. Apply all of them and the ratios could get extreme enough to address the Fermi paradox

Anton, you are such an amazing science resource on here! Thank you for all that you do. ❤

The best thing I heard on red dwarfs from an expert, on Startalk <inhales> was that red dwarfs (all of them) are still in their volatile infancy.

Anton rocks the universe. Thanks Anton, I love what you are doing.

Why is this called a paradox? Do we have enough data about other star systems to say red dwarves rarely have life around them? If we don’t have enough data then how can we call something a paradox based on a single sample from almost endless unexplored universe?

Isn’t it egocentric basing a theory/paradox covering entire universe based on just ourselves? If there’s a lot of life out there in the universe and we’re only an outlier then it’s not a paradox but simple statistics, you will always gets outliers here and there.

If the "Grand Tack" hypothesis is correct, then it's not just having a SINGLE gas giant that explains why our Solar System had become conducive for the formation of life. It was having TWO gas giants that did the trick. Most star systems that have gas giants tend to have "Hot Jupiters" that orbit very close to their parent stars. Our own Jupiter would have likely ended up in a similar orbit if it wasn't for Saturn pulling on Jupiter and dragging it back out to a greater distance, thereby sparing the inner rocky planets from a grisly fate. We may have Saturn to thank for our existence.

Yet another interesting video, Anton – you are the hardest working science communicator on YouTube, hands down! ❤️❤️❣️

8:29: Not to mention periodic mass extinctions. With each one, life becomes more resilient and sophisticated.

Every time Anton releases a video, I have to adapt the world building of my sci-fi story. 😂
