The hill mode paddle shifter really increases the Regenerative Braking to slow you down with "engine braking" when going downhill. It's a way of slowing down like you're "downshifting" by converting the car's momentum back into battery charge. If you "down shift" every time you want slow down, you'll get the maximum electric range out of the car.
