Saw Doc perform this at the National Folk Festival in East Lansing, MI in the late 90’s early 00’s.

He introduced it something like, “This is a song written by someone who loved so much it hurts.”

Wonderful rendition of an immortal song by a legendary performer

I saw him perform this on the Watson Stage at Merlefest several years ago. All alone on the stage under the moon it was one of the most moving things I have ever experienced. He introduced it by talking about how his son Merle and he disagreed on things including some music. But when he actually listened to this song he realized his son was right about this one. I still tear up when I hear it.
