Root | Game the Game

On Game the Game this week we’re playing Root, by Leder Games! This game sees 2-4 players (up to 6 with the Riverfolk Expansion) battle to wrestle control of the Great Woodland away from the conniving Marquise de Cat. But these critters better be careful, because the birds of prey who once ruled this land are eager to reclaim their birthright.

Tabletop games are super fun, but learning the complicated directions and rules can be a challenge. Becca Scott is your game tutor, explaining the game mechanics in an easy to follow way, so you can get to playing the games faster.

17:19 *Rule: 7.5.2 *

*Resolve the Decree. *You must resolve the Decree, starting with the leftmost column and moving right. In each column, you must resolve all of its cards, but in any order. For each card, you must take the action listed for its column, as follows. If you cannot fully take an action, you immediately fall into turmoil (7.7).
Recruit. Place a warrior in any clearing with a roost whose suit matches the card suit.
*Move. Move at least one warrior from any clearing whose suit matches the card suit.*
Battle. Initiate a battle in any clearing whose suit matches the card suit.
Build. Place a roost in any clearing you rule whose suit matches the card suit and which has no roost.

*This means you have to move FROM the suit of the card in the decree, meaning you would have fallen into turmoil right there and then on your first move!!!*

Yeah, a lot of rules mistakes here. The main one is that when the Eyrie adds a card to its decree, the suit of that card dictates in which clearing the action has to occur. So, for example, Becca should have gone into turmoil on the first turn, because her move card said she had to move from a Mouse clearing, but the only clearing she occupied was a Bunny clearing. Then later she had to build in a Bunny clearing (without a roost) but she didn't occupy a clearing that fit that. She treated all cards in her decree as wilds (like bird cards).

A couple other I caught were the Woodland Alliance has to spend an extra supporter to put a Sympathy token in a clearing with 2 or more warriors from a single faction. So the WA's first placement of a Sympathy token was incorrect.

29:09 Eyrie built a roost when her decree stated she needed to build one in a bunny clearing she controls not a Fox clearing TURMOIL

29:49 Woodland Alliance Your Sympathy tokens must be connected when placing them.

37:14 Eyrie Just skipped a Recruit. She used her BIRD Card but not her MOUSE. TURMOIL

38:42 While Eyrie does get Victory Points, She only gets 1 for taking out the Sympathy Token and 3VP for the Roost. You get no points for taking out warriors.

39:12 Woodland Alliance does not KEEP the card that is given to them when someone causes outrage. It goes instantly into the supporter deck.

40:50 Vagabond is hiding his quests. They need to stay face up for all factions to see.

43:10 Marquise De Cat cannot CRAFT that card. She doesn't have 3 workshops. That card requires 3

43:44 Marquise De Cat already CRAFTED, she cannot craft again.

44:44 Marquise De Cat, CRAFTED, BUILT, and now Marched. She's doing her 3rd action not her 2nd.

45:57 Marquise De Cat took a 4th action.

46:58 Eyrie ignored 2 recruit actions.

49:31 Woodland Alliance already revolted for the Fox Clearing. You can't revolt the same clearing when your base matching it is already out.

1:10:40 Marquise De Cat did not give Woodland Alliance a card for stepping into the Sympathetic clearing.

1:11:35 Marquise De Cat cannot build there. her supply line is cut off by the Eyrie and the Woodland Alliance.

1:12:01 Marquise De Cat again you are cut off from that area. You cannot build there.

Total:
Marquise De Cat: -7
Eyrie: -4
Woodland Alliance: -3
Vagabond: -1

This would be understandable if it was a beginning game, but they stated they did practice rounds. So what the heck Becca?

Love to just get a feeling of the game, even with the rule mistakes...

Yes, there were mistakes, but this really helped me understand a lot that I didn't. Super challenging game to understand, especially when you are all new players trying to figure your own faction out. It can be disheartening. Lol. But I say trudge through a game and watch this video and then try again. And then change factions and play again.
In regards to the mistakes in this video, I do agree the creators should post in the description comments highlighting these, so we can learn correctly. But amazing that they made and edited this video. It still very much helped us.

It was great to see Root in action. Picked up a copy (+ the expansion) the other day and read the rules but I'm a much better visual learner. It was also really useful reading the comments and learning of their mistakes. I thought the way the one was playing her Decrees was a little suspicious! Thanks GtG and comment section :3

Love this game. I love Vast too but this game is easier to teach and easier to track who is winning.

Am I the only one who feels they messed up the powers for the vagabond, and it should be wolf steals things, beaver repairs, and raccoon digs through trash.

I love this show, but I was very disappointed with this episode due to the many rule mistakes. And I am quite sure I did not even get all of them.

I enjoyed this, regardless of the rules mistakes.

So many comments about rules, which is pretty normal for a GtG show. But I have to wonder, why have they not assigned some kind of rule-checker like Tabletop used to have? One would think with the amount of comments they get about rules they would've done so by now. Or do they have one and s/he sucks at his/her job?

I watched this video month ago not knowing much about Root. I‘ve read the rules now and wanted to watch this to solidify my rule-saviness. Well… first turn of the dynasties has 2 mistakes, First turn of the alliance another mistake and it continues…

It‘s Impressive how wrongly they Are playing Root. Thanks to the cast and the amazing productions it’s very entertaining still

My friends and I tried playing this game yesterday. I played as the Woodland Alliance, and we stopped because I was so confused how to play the Woodland Alliance so we stopped playing. Seeing it played out helps a lot.

I know this is an older video, but I really hope they get a rule checker on staff. I know, people make mistakes. But seriously, they weren't really playing root. Dave using revolt to attack in fox territories long after the fox base was built. Becca's often cited misuse of the decree actions.. seriously, how do you NOT win when you are cheating with the birds that hard? Gina should not have been able to win that turn due to supply line restrictions. The also ignored the rule that the birds rule on a tie and that the cats can save killed units by playing a card.

To all those who say "Who cares? People make mistakes." A lot of people care. It ruins the enjoyment of the game to watch it played so incorrectly. At the very least put annotations in the video explaining the things that were played wrong. Even Achievement Hunter has a rules expert on hand to catch mistakes, and they are video game channel. Becca is the one teaching the game at the beginning, she should know how to play. They play a learning game before they film. They should be catching mistakes before the real game.

32:56 Now every time I see a raccoon I'm going to think of how absurd it would look in a football helmet and pads.
