Is Lean an adjective of Six Sigma or is it vice versa? Is Lean Six Sigma an oxymoron? Lean is a principle driven methodology that was mastered by Toyota but which goes back to the days of the Motion and Time studies by F. Talyor. Original traces of it can be found at the Ford assembly manufacturing systems as far back as the early 1900s. Six Sigma on the other hand is a concept that originated at Motorola in the early 1980s. The two concepts eventually joined forces under the name of Lean Six Sigma or LSS.
