Which is Your Favourite shape? Throwing stoneware vases.

Angular vases, made in a batch of nine, each to a slightly different shape but following similar rules. The most obvious perhaps is the narrow base, which must account for roughly half the vessel, thereafter what goes on top can be thrown freely, as long as the walls remain sharp and angled.

Once leather hard they’ll be trimmed and a fine line of clay, a coil, is slipped onto the walls and carved to be very fine, reflecting the sharpness found on the rim, which is another part I’ll trim if needs be.

I make these pots to be displayed in groups generally but they work just as well as individual pieces. In the past I made a few much larger versions, which I must do again, although this time carefully thrown on batts and lifted away very cautiously so the angled section in the wall doesn’t slightly deform, which resulted in considerable warping.

#4 & 6. I am not a fan of the angular shapes, but those are my favorites among the other ones.

If I am honest, I prefer even simpler design that’s just an outward tapered straight edge with no other bends, kind of like what’s shown at the 11 second mark. Maybe even with with a small out-turned lip. Either way I’m a huge fan of your work and in love with your teapots. Wish you shipped to Australia… maybe one day if I’m lucky.
