"For what they were" is key wording.

Love the teachers Moment: right as he finished reading the question he blinked, eyes wide and declared it a good question. He then reached into his database of car knowledge and produced a damn fine answer.

Teachers love hearing well thought and prepared questions. It produces lovely bits of new knowledge.

Prefer the S-10 personally. Little heavier, much better power and reliability with the 4.3, only real downside is it’s almost impossible to find one in the 4.3 4x4 5speed spec.

-update, bought a v6 4x4 5spd s10 because I kept being reminded I wanted one by the replies to this comment.

Had a '94 Ranger with 5spd and the Explorer's 4.0 V6. With a helper spring added to the rear leaf springs it made for a super capable little truck. Loved it .

Just avoid the 3.0L V6 Rangers and you’re golden. All the power of the 4 banger with all the efficiency of the 4.0L

He's right. I just replaced the motor and everything in the engine bay in my ranger. Cost me about 3800$ and it'll last another 200k miles.

Have a 98 Ranger 4.0L 4x4 5 speed. That thing is a beast, no leaks, no problems with 200k miles

Just recently acquired my 2nd longbed manual 2.8 1987 S-10. Having a great time replacing/upgrading various components. The part of me that died the day I had to give up the 1st has come roaring back to life, and I am one happy Lad!

S-10s are also a target for insurance actuaries, since it has a reputation for DUI-related incidents.

Never understood why my insurance kept climbing regardless of my driving habits, until I was told by an insurance agent about the statistics.

He has it backwards. Mazdas were Rangers. Rangers were not Mazdas. He is thinking of the Courier being a rebadged Japanese truck

You buy a s10 if you like men and you buy a ranger if you love men on top of you. Love my ranger.

My uncle buys new cars every 4-5 years as he drives 200+ miles a day for work. Always buys the most bare bone zero option cheapest vehicle available in America each time. One purchase was a 1996 Ford Ranger XL. 4 cylinder manual transmission . No A/C no power steering. Put 350, 000 miles on. Had been bumped into so many times by other drivers that it actually paid itself off as my uncle would pocket the DIY check from the insurance company. He sold it for $500 when he was done with. Best car he ever owned. I learned to drive stick in that.

Had a ranger off road in the 2010s, got me through such much. Miss that truck.

Speaking of Rangers with a 4 cylinder and 5 speed, that's what I got in my '92. It's harder to find OE parts for since it's older, but for being 32 years old, and being the owner for 4 years, it's been a great truck. Ironically enough, growing up my dad had a '91 S10 with a 4.3 and a 5 speed, so other than just loving my truck for what it is, in a roundabout way I feel a personal connection with that generation of small pickup trucks.

Lol i had a 4 cylinder stick ranger. Parts are cheap and easy to come by. And those trucks are pretty simple to work on for the average joe. Highly recommend

1995 GMC Sonoma (same as S10). On the 2.0L the electronic distribution module is mounted at the bottom of the block on the passenger side, accessible through a flap in the front passenger side wheel well. The spark plug cables are six feet long to get from the bottom of the engine and over the top to the plugs on the driver side. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Memory is fuzzy, but I want to think I had to pass each spark wire one at a time through a passage that went through the exhaust manifold.

I had the base base base 2006 Ranger with a single cab, 4 cyl, and 5spd with 9k miles on it. It was my first vehicle, and I couldn't have treated it worse if I tried, but it never had any issues. I miss that thing.

I got a 1997 ranger I'm rebuilding. It's also a 4 cylinder manual and I love it. I can definitely back him on the aftermarket support and super cheap. When it's finished it's gonna awesome.

Tow rating as a Focus? Have you seen the shit people put these trucks through?

I’ve got a manual 03 Ranger that I inherited from my dad. I love this truck. I also have 2024 Subaru that I haven’t touched since I got this truck.
