Α rare Greek song about Georgios Papadopoulos.
Georgios Papadopoulos was a military officer of the Greek army who fought in the Greco-Italian war, the war against the insurgents in Greece and later led the coup of 21st April 1967. On 23 August 1975, he and several others were found guilty and were sentenced to death, which was later commuted to life imprisonment. Papadopoulos showed no remorse and steadfastly refused to apply for parole or amnesty or to use the leniency provisions that allowed him to be released on the grounds of ill health. In the summer of 1996, his health deteriorated resulting in his being hospitalized for three years in an Athens hospital until his death on June 27, 1999. He was buried in First Cemetery of Athens three days later, in the presence of old associates and regime sympathisers. While imprisoned he created and led the nationalist party EPEN.
The 21st April regime or commonly known as Greek Junta or Regime of the Colonels was a right-wing military dictatorship that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. On 21 April 1967, a group of colonels overthrew the caretaker government a month before scheduled elections which Georgios Papandreou's Centre Union was favoured to win and Papandreou's son Andreas threatened the state with armed rebellion in case his father didn't win. It was ruled by Georgios Papadopoulos from 1967 to 1973, but an attempt to renew its support in a 1973 referendum on the monarchy and gradual return to democracy was ended by another coup by the hardliner Dimitrios Ioannidis, who ruled it until he was ousted on 24 July 1974 due to a coup made by his senior staff after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
