Fears grow over mosquito-borne illnesses after teen left paralyzed

A Missouri teenager was left paralyzed and on a ventilator after being infected with West Nile virus from a mosquito bite. Meanwhile, the family of a New Hampshire man killed by Eastern Equine Encephalitis is speaking out. NBC’s Maggie Vespa reports for TODAY.

So sad. Praying you recover! My spouse was diagnosed with Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus from a mosquito. 5 years ago.
We live in Tennessee. He survived. So thankful!!! I and ppl all over the United States and other countries prayed for him. Doctor's gave him up, but God raised him up. He has minor brain damage and a few challenges, but he's doing really well considering what he went through.

😱😱idk why but mosquitoes love my blood ..if I go out with no spray or don’t reapply they go crazy last month I walked outside to the back and got bit over 30 times and I’m allergic to them so they get swollen and hot .. I feel so bad for days ..now this is not the way I want to go

I'm in New York and the mosquitoes are horrible. We went out on our deck yesterday and they were out at 1pm. We need a stronger deet spray because we have Off and were still getting bit.

My heart goes out to the family and patients. Something similar happened to a neighbor's son a few years back. He was at baseball practice when he became sick. At home, he complained about a headache and tried to take a nap but later in the evening, he started slurring his words. By the time the neighbors took their son to the hospital, his face was slanted and couldn't move the left side of his body. The family went to two different hospitals and the doctors could not provide a diagnosis, but they knew he was bitten by a bee or mosquito. As a result, their son ended up a quadriplegic😢

My dad got Zika virus about 10 years ago, it was so scary they couldn’t figure out what was wrong he was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Thankfully he recovered. It’s the reason why I spray myself with a lot of deet which I know is terrible for you but after seeing my dad go through what he did, I don’t take chances.

My brother had West Nile Virus years back. He was diagnosed at the ER. If he's at the ER, he's on death's door. That's the sickest I've ever seen him. He was at death's door. He was looking through the window.
