Fuse Box Made of Wood 🪵😱

WOW what a find an installation still working but the consumer units (fuse boxes) are made from wood. In BS7671 Wiring Regulations it's a requirement for all new domestic consumer units to be made from a non-combustible material usually steel or housed within a non-combustible enclosure. To me it's fascinating at old consumer unit were made of wood with BS3036 rewireable fuses protecting the out going circuits.

Those fuse boxes are 1920s / early 30s
I love the old stuff, and I bet there’s nothing wrong with them no signs of overheating or burning no exposed conductive parts unless you open the cover’s and still safe for continued service.
But what do I know I’am just a humble spark who’s opinion means nothing.
Fantastic video Gaz as always 👍👍👍👍❤️

Has it still got the periodic sticker on it when Gordon fitted it?

every time I change a consumer unit, the zdb on the old ones are much lower than when a new one is fitted, it looks rusty, but the material I bet is a top quality material

I worked in a old style DIY shop that was built in the 1890's

That is a piece of history and a work of art. Probably a collectors item

A few months ago my elderly neighbour asked me to fix his lounge light. And after finding the fusebox found something similar to this. Couldnt believe it!

Gaz considering the age of those fuse boxes and they haven’t been touched since they were first installed apart from replacing the fuse wire in one or two fuse holders, I bet you won’t find any loose terminal screws. In fact it will probably take a bit of effort to loosen any of them, because they have seized up, you have to remember that metal weather it’s copper brass still aluminium expands when it get worm/ hot as we know copper conductors get worm /hot when current flows through them therefore the brass terminals will as well and so they will expand making a tighter connection.
So the idea that the screws can come loose over time is rubbish. But what do I know I’am just a humble spark who’s opinion means nothing.

The deadlier ones are those with the fuse wire on the OUTSIDE of the carrier, fused line and neutral

Better than the state of a lot of the boards fitted by "Niceic approved contractors" I come across.

We still use these kit-kats and same wiring method in India it means we are 100 year behind from UK 😅

Ignoring the fuses themselves.. I'm more worried about the wires
