I call BS on China's claim. An authoritarian dictatorship KNOWS when a Chinese "mercenary" fights in a Russian unit, the only way that happens is they let him do it and knowing China it's probably more than that, perhaps a test run on how Chinese soldiers can integrate into the Russian military. Hell, if other countries like Hungary can ban mercenaries and soldiers fighting for a foreign military sighting it as high treason, I'd say China could have done so as well and they probably did too.

Freedom in China is really illusionary and "mercenaries" are especially the category of people China controls closely and internal security in China is ridiculously strong and paranoid. There is no way in hell their claims are true!

Why 'new offensive'? The Russians have been on the offensive ever since the defeat of the Ukrainian super-duper counteroffensive aimed at cutting the land bridge to, and taking Crimea in end of October 2023. They slow down somewhat in the autumn and spring due to weather/ground conditions.
There is no reason to believe that this year will be different. This offensive will last till September/October, and assuming there is still something left of Ukraine, will pick up over winter again.
