When I was in HS in the late 90s I saw Dave in concert. This song spoke to me more than I can articulate or express. There is something about the feel and tone of this masterpiece that has always held a place in my heart. IMO it is a perfect song when I needed it the most.

I think there's something quite beautiful in the subtlety of saying 'say goodbye' right at the end, having said 'go back to being friends'. Makes it sounds like a cautionary tale a little bit. Like they're 2 friends, who have have feelings who each other but will never be together, have one night together with the intention of going back to normal, 'going back to being friends', but once the deed is done and they come to it, it's too painful and too difficult to be friends anymore so they 'say goodbye'. Might not be what dave intended. Might be say goodbye as in saying goodbye, see you around, see you next week or whatever. The great thing about it is you could easily make it mean either.
