As much as I love this movie, but as a Historian I have to facepalm. First of all the Germans never would have shot at Italian civilians on purpose since the Italians were still considered allies since Mussolini was still there in the northern part of Italy. And second the Germans had a high fire disciplin, they wouldn't shoot around wildly hoping to hit something. But that is in most ww2 movies wrong. Still love it though. Also sorry for my bad english.

Fun fact: President Grant wanted to desegregate the US army in the 1870s. He was stopped on the basis of the colored regiments having the highest morale, and the then Secretary of War stated that diluting their ranks with white men would lower their morale (at the time the US army had a near 30% desertion rate across the frontier outposts per year, but the colored regiments had a less than 5%).

Later in the Spanish War, it was brought up again, but stopped due to the belief that people of African Decent had immunity to most tropical diseases (obviously they were wrong but 1800s science is 1800s science).

Finally, Woodrow Wilson screwed up the whole nation by Federalizing the Jim Crow laws.

The battle scene was shot in the little village of Colognora, in the Tuscany region in Italy: it's an interesting place, with few dozens of inhabitants... everyone can tell you everything about the movie.
The movie depicts the Serchio river battle as well as nazi violence against people (the worst mass murder in the region took place not far from Colognora, in Sant'Anna di Stazzema)

So what did the buffalo soldiers actually accomplish here? Most of their squad ran away and led civilians to their demise?

For those saying that Germans wouldn't have shot at Italian Citizens, those citizens where talking with American soldiers, possibly revealing German positions which would make them spotters aka enemy combatants, fair game.

its impressive how they managed to gather so many corny hollywood war movie themes in 1 scene:

- the platoon of german soldiers needed to hit 2 us soldiers
- the us soldier doing the classic heroic last man standing scene
- us soldiers with 200 round mags
- entire groups of german soldiers running at a guy standing in the open not even bothering to shoot back
- the classic scene where us soldiers try to save a single civiilian with a full battle going on around them
-- whole firesquad of german soldiers cant hit a single us soldier while the us soldier does 180's anticipating every incoming attacker

Let's see: Psycho Germans, way more submachine guns than any unit would have on either side, Germans with early war stuff, stereotypes and overacting. It's like someone had a checklist of all those old WW2 movies and said, "We gotta include them all here."

This is a brutal scene to watch. Not because of why you think but because of the inacuracies, the abismal tactics shown of both germans and Americans. I mean the germans on roofs with a arch would not climb to the open position on the roof to fire, the Americans would not worry about Italian civilians when they are under fire, that you worry about after the fact or at most you tell them to run or direct them where to hide. The big american holding the child, his backpack is inaccurate for the period, GI's didn't carry a large rucksack, they had a medium one.
