This video speaks only half the truth. In today’s time, just a CPL may cost approximately Rs 50 lakhs, however, nobody tells you about the add-on expenses. Once you get a CPL license, most pilots opt for multi-engine training which is again an additional expense in lakhs and then try for a job because most don’t get jobs with just a CPL. In India it’s extremely difficult to get a job as a pilot especially if you are a newbie with just CPL in hand. Many don’t get jobs even with CPL +multi-engine training so they opt for “type rating” of a specific aircraft type for example Q400, ATR, boeing, Airbus and this again costs in lakhs and lakhs (not just a few lakhs) and you may finally end up getting a job if the airline sees that you are good enough to be hired. Sometimes as a newbie with zero experience and no type rating, you may be hired in an Indian commercial airline however, just because you do not have the specific type rating pertaining to that particular aircraft, the airline company may ask you to pay the company for the type rating which is in lakhs. Yes, in return you have the job and they train you with the specific type rating which is required to fly that particular aircraft. It is a win-win situation but you need to have that many lakhs with you to pay them. This may not be reimbursed to you as you are an inexperienced pilot/newbie. Plus point is you have a job in hand and also you are getting the type rating done from the company. These things actually happen in India and pilots pay the companies to get the job even with the CPL and multi-engine training they have. Moral of the story is, even with CPL in hand, you end up paying some more lakhs. So pilots pay 30 lakhs, 40 lakhs maybe more or maybe less to the company. I’m talking about Indian airlines here and not airlines outside India. Sad part is nobody talks about this and when pilots are desperate for the job as newbies without experience, they end up paying the company depending on the fleet/aircraft type. Each airline company has a certain amount they quote. Also, if pilots sit idle without flying for over a few months, they are supposed to do re-training which can be again an expense. So they end up taking jobs even if they have to pay. Also, the payment is done to the company and not a person . Moreover, it may be considered like a training cost. So it’s done in a legal way. A gentle reminder again that this amount is not a part of your CPL cost. It is done between the airline as per the airline policy and the pilot. Also, pilots have to sign a bond in India and it is of a minimum of 3 years or so. Again, this is depending on the company policies. If you leave the company before completing the bond, you are bound to pay 30 lakhs or so (again depending on the company policy) to the company you are working for. After completing 3 years, if you want to leave the job and get into another airline, you have to serve a notice period of a minimum of 1 year in most companies. Now if you have experience in a particular type of aircraft for example ATR and want to jump to another company with a different type of aircraft say Boeing, the airline company may ask pilots to pay for the boeing type-rating and may or may not agree to reimburse that amount . A simple example is you can’t have experience in an ATR or Q400 aircraft and immediately start flying a Boeing just because you have flying experience in the aforementioned types of aircraft. You have to do the type rating all over again for Boeing and study about that particular aircraft and clear the type rating. Some airlines agree to pay back the cost slowly and some airlines may not agree to pay back the amount . Either way, you need to have many many lakhs in hand to do the type rating again. Each time you change the company and end up changing the type of aircraft, you have to study and clear the type rating. Your money is on the line here. Even experienced pilots who have many hours of experience are supposed to pay for the type rating if you want to change the aircraft type. Rarely companies sponsor your type rating. Some airlines agree to reimburse your type rating amount over a period of time. But the question is do you have that many lakhs in hand to pay them in full after spending so many lakhs already for your CPL?? After all this, there are a lot of people that ask why are the pilots paid so high. Pilots have to pay a lot to become one. The expenses are never ending. Also, pilots are paid well because it’s a job that requires extreme skill and is also stressful. Many people keep saying pilots do nothing as they fly on an autopilot mode. Yes, bigger aircraft like boeing, airbus have autopilot however, smaller aircraft like Dash-8 Q400 do not have an autopilot system. So it is all manual skills. Also, we as literate people should know that the machines in the cockpit don’t work without incorporating right values/information into the system which is a pilot’s job. Pilots need to be vigilant all the time. That’s why there are 2 pilots in a cockpit because you cannot have any room for error. They have to avoid hard landings, exceedances and have to follow other parameters on a daily basis as per DGCA. Safety is extremely imperative while flying. The company monitors everything closely so you can’t do as per your whims and fancies. In the end, most pilots end up paying over a crore for CPL, Multi-engine training, type rating/company payments, miscellaneous, etc. Also to become a captain, you need to get your ATPL. With a CPL, you are going to remain a first officer. So studying for ATPL and clearing it is a milestone. This needs effort and dedication. Pilots have to keep on giving exams, retraining, simulator training, IRPPC, etc throughout their life. Basically they are always studying for these exams and keeping themselves updated. This is how a layman is safe in their hands while flying. It is just never ending. Oh yes, they are paid really really well and I would say, they deserve it!!!! If you are planning to become a pilot and are from the Indian airforce, you may have some leeway and payments may not be so high. Do your own research. This information I have here is because I have pilots in the family and a lot of pilot friends who talk about these things.

1. Tiring job
2. Flying long hours can affect your sleep cycle. Pilots despise the red-eye flights as they are very uncomfortable. The constant changes in schedule affect your routine, and you may not be able to settle down with your partner. You live the life of an expat.
3. Sleep deprivation
4. Motion sickness
5. Lot of stress
5. Missing lout on family holidays
6.Losing your career instantly due to medical reasons or pregnancy
7. Spending more time away from family
8.Being away can affect your relationship and bonding with your family. The situation is worse if you are flying on weekends, during holidays and nights.
9.Failing the medical exam can end your flying profession
10. Layovers are less exciting in this career as you can end up in an airport hotel mostly without seeing much of the country.
