I mean, electric kettles definitely exist, but they are not an assumed item that every kitchen has. Some people have them, some people don’t. I have a stove top kettle. I grew up in a home that heated water in the microwave

As an asian, having an electric kettle is not just for tea and coffee but also bcs you eat instant ramen, or soak dried ingredients for cooking etc, and even unclogging blocked pipes. There’s so many usage for boiling water!

American here...I have had several electric kettles over the past 35 years, starting with one in my college (you say "university") dormitory. I don't drink alot of hot tea, but that isn't the only useful purpose of hot water. You can alot make soup, gruel, curry, etc in our electric kettles. We even have the collapsible ones.

It’s available in the states, but it’s not really used often. I think Coffee makers are more frequently used since coffee is a bigger trend than tea for Americans.
